I still find the Mouse to be much easier, as my brain gets confused about WASD positioning when my sip changes direction, or moves in a circle- but it often comes in handy to alternate between the two
For example, I mostly suck at manually firing 360 Turrets, and usually just Let AI Gunners man them- Usually If I try to aim a turret and Steer with the Mouse, the entire ship rotates, I go off course, and the Turret Weapon still misses
But recently I've been piloting an Archemides which ONLY has 360 Turrets- I'll fly most of the time with the Mouse Steering, but then set a path parallel or angled at an enemy ship, switch to WASD but hardly use it, just cruising at a set path, and then better aiming and firing with the Turret- THEN I switch quickly back to Mouse Steering and manoevre away- I've been getting so much better that I can now shoot down incoming missiles with a PD Laser
Another example is my Goliath- it has a Ludicrously Long Range, Massive Damage Dual Plasma Cannon, but it is also mounted on a " \/ " angled mount- so Long Range, I cruise in with the Mouse, switch to "Straight Ahead Cruise" mode, fire a bunch of shots I can aim and also angle and aim, then go back to Mouse Steering
It also works as you want it to in the above Post Dragonsblade- you can set a path, click the Mouse Steering off, then cruise as you use the Mouse to now click onto another Ship to Hail, set it up for Healing, or Target and Fire on it, OR to just cruise and reorder the Fleet, take a Look at your Ship's Crew, or check your Weapons or Cargo, but you still maintain your course and direction
Oddly, the 2 times I use Ctrl to be steady and still the most is with taking Screen Snapshots, and Testing Out Weapons- everything gets Lined up nicely and then "frozen" still for Snapshots- and for Weapon Testing I can get non-moving, more accurate ranges and firing angles to fine-tune and compare Weapon Crafting setups, ROF rates, Heat Overloads on specific mounts, and Energy Drain and Usage
Hope that helps you Dragonsblade- I know it has uses for me
While a toggle option is nice, if possible I would love a hold option so I can hold it and use the mouse to interact with the UI, then release and return to mouse steering.
Toggle's are nice, but sometimes I forget which mode it is in!
So once I switched that one command on my first playthrough, it's stayed that way automatically for every other Game I started, and I've assumed Ctrl WAS the default setting for "Steering Mode"
You actually had me curious so I Loaded In and hit the "Default Mode" and yep, "Steering Mode" was Listed as "Back Quote" ??? Which I have NO IDEA what Button THAT is- and we already have "Spinning Roll" with A and D and that's mostly for Yachts and Shuttles, so I changed mine to Ctrl which is in a Good Setup with all the other Auxilliary Control Keys
So apologies again for accidentally misleading you- But I'm glad I helped a Little so that WeaverSong came in and gave the correct information to you- Not Sure what button you'll end up using, but having mine at Ctrl has been excellent for fluidly Toggling back-and-forth between the two Steering Modes and doing some nice manouevers and shooting
It is still CTRL because I decided not to reset player key binds when I changed those.
So I WASN'T CRAZY- it WAS Ctrl - Cool you didn't force that change on people, at Least for me Ctrl is a nice spot for it- there are game moments where you need that back-and-forth switching
