The Last Star Fighter Achievement... :)
So I am having a problem and I don't know how to solve it... I have tried the last star fighter for a very long time... The problems I have is I have try doing it 5 or 6 levels below what the target is to get the achievement due to the many marauders spawn in's and how fast I am gaining experience killing the fleet and the marauders and if I leave them alone they just keep building up and then I have a small fleet of marauders attacking the fleet and me... I have tried it under level 20 several times with the same result and I am having the same problem under 30, under 40 and under 50 and it is the last one I need currently.

Is it possible the exp needs some adjusting to compensate for the extra marauder spawn-ins?

Marauders should not be spawning more than 1 or 2 at a time. Or do you mean faction "hunters"? In that case, if you have a very bad reputation with them, they will spawn fleets against you, which will make things difficult. So the more enemies you have, the harder it gets. In that case, you need to do it in a sector controlled by a friendly faction, with little presence of your enemies, so just a couple of marauders will spawn in eventually.
What you can also do is to kill some fleet members, warp out to reset marauders, then warp back in. The ships you killed will be saved.

now I have a Question does it have to be an attacking or defending fleet you have to destroy or either?

Actually there are only attacking fleets right now, the rest is just random ships and sentinels coming to help :)

Yeah I started a new game and picked lone wolf I didn't even think about the negative reputation causing problems, I also picked a tiny map in hopes to increase the chances of faction wars happening in the right level of zones... not sure if that helps but I thought I would try...

I just got it :) I was level 19 when I started the attack in a level 22 area, I used lone wolf and all the + damage and + Damage Reduction perks I could use and I picked the largest map size just under the infinite space one to increase my chances...
After "2 million" tries I got it lol... https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2070190144

Sorry for necro'ing the thread, but I thought I'd share how I also came to get this achievement just now.
Using the Mi-loushu and Lone Wolf background. Technology, Ordinancy and Armour Plating experience perks. For Other Perks, I went with Battle Rush, Combat Genius, Battleship Raid, The Perfect Predator, Legionary and Dogfighter. The map was set to one less than maximum size.
For equipment, I mostly stacked shields and nuclear generators with one shield charger. For skill points, I went with the combat tree, focusing on more damage, critical chance and critical damage.
I started to fight the level 13 Syndicate attack fleet at level 9 and by the end got to level 12. Using a Burst AP Overload Heavy Cannon and 2 point defence lasers I was able to loop around the attacking fleet to keep them all bunched together as I made strafing runs with the cannon, breaking off from the group and waiting for heat to dissipate. The point defence lasers were for attack drones that would occasionally latch on to me. The key seemed to be getting an attack fleet with no laser beams and dodging the incoming fire.

Hopefully this helps other people get this tricky achievement :)

I'm on my first playthrough, and I just got last starfighter and combat genius at once. Level 35, in a Guardian. Last thing I killed was a red skull dread.

That's a pretty impressive brag. Congrats!

I had a big flock of marauders all gold star level 59 and 60 spawning in a friendly allied sector that is a level 10 area. There were atleast 8 of them gold stars and not counting the random Red Skulls fleet spawning in also. It took me awhile, but I managed to kill them all. I got all crafted heavy burst missile launchers with speed factor. It took probaly close to an hour to kill them, I had to knock out the healers first. I had one sidekick that I had built as a meat shield, this partner of mine is loaded with armor and energy shield, and hes equipped with only one weapon Capital Laser Beam. He got enough juice to fire nonstop without overheating.

That was over a year ago and the way marauders spawn has changed completely. Especially in the past month. As well as the mechanics behind hunter swarms in general being tweaked a few times. The marauder hunter swarms specifically scale with the number of pirate nests in a sector, any levels of bounty (attract more powerful enemies), and your level.

The healers are a recent addition too, and they can be a annoying to deal with. Which in turn makes it more difficult to kill the rest of a swarm. Plus healers from previous swarms fly off when the attackers are all dead, but they don't leave the sector. So next swarm they come back to join the new arrivals. This can make an encounter more and more difficult if you don't have a way to kill them off. Which usually requires manually targeting them with something like beams to quickly shoot between other ships you're fighting.

Congrats, that's certainly brag-worthy :) Yeah the Guardian is a pretty good ship. Slim profile so you're hard to hit.
