With the game set up the way it is I usually just start a new game with the aim of one specific goal. This time it's purely mining (With a modest amount of defence) and I am killing the pig getting xp and cash.
I have combat builds and I could just convert one of those to mine but it's not the same.
Bit of a shame there isn't any real way to mine orange gear. Even getting purples is problematic for me right now. Blue gear is super easy. Mining has this sorted for sure. Much easier to get blue gear mining than combat but after that it dies right off.
Oh well. No biggie.
Mopping up one asteroid field with a couple refineries running is enough resources to craft a handful of basic and advanced upgrade kits to use on any gear and build your own gear so I'd do that even combat oriented. I guess salvaging and scrapping would do the same but mining is quick piles of loot, even if I'm using skillpoints and perks towards combat.
If I'm not mistaken because I haven't bothered yet you can keep separate ships with separate crew and swap out, so your mining crew is getting geology type stuff while you mine and your combat ship crew is getting shooty type skills based on what your doing with them.
Probably true but the way things are currently getting yourself in all orange gear is a serious chore bordering on impossible. You don't need orange gear because you 'cannot survive without it' so you currently don't really need anything stronger and I doubt you will any time soon. All purple done right is super powerful already.
This game and the way it is designed to have you try new builds and a new game rather than try to do several things in one game is why I set myself a goal and try to do all orange in one game. Like this time it's get a mining ship to 50 and in orange gear just mining. Minimum combat. But all my builds end up only half orange because you simply do not get some gear in orange at all. It's either not there or so stupidly rare I cannot find it. This time I don't even see myself getting any oranges. I know my goal limits my options and I know I could go get some other ways but if all game styles are really going to be viable there wants to be some way a pure miner can get them by mining. Probably by mining an ultra rare item that only has the chance of dropping on the asteroid that 'clears' an asteroid belt or something. And that's only a chance of dropping and only at 50 mining etc etc.
Getting orange gear is a gameplay goal and not a necessity as such so anyone wanting MORE than orange gear at this point in the game is just being greedy. Be good though...
I don't think it should be easy and hopefully it's something (combat build) like using 10 other orange tier gear to upgrade a purple or something. Ancient relics now are entirely trivial and I wouldn't want to see oranges made anything like how those work now. It's fine as it is since they don't make the best gear but the best stuff shouldn't be made trivial. 10 orange bits of gear isn't an entirely trivial feat although it does become moderately easy once you really work out how to get them I suppose. At least there would be a use for oranges you currently cannot use. I have so many of those banked it's crazy. I suspect many of us do.
Anyway... it definitely could use a way to get some of the really rare and crafted items up to orange tier and yeah, one day, if he upgrades the content to be much tougher or with a difficulty slider maybe higher than orange.
Not needed just now though. It's a fair point on human nature @RJS but it's also fair to say that there is currently a need for something and maybe let the future look after itself. Don't 'not' do something now for fear of ruining something that doesn't exist later on.
