how do you get abandoned/derelict ships if there is no station in the system?
So, I found an abandoned cruiser, it's way too big to big to fit in my cargo and there are no stations in the system. is there a way to transfer my crew into it somehow or something?

Warp Towage Power lets you drag ships that you have tractored through warps. You get 100 as part of the freighter bonus, and you can install Warp Towage Array's on any ship; just stack them until you have more Warp Towage Power than the ship would take up in your cargo.

thanks, i'll look into that. don't know if my current ship has enough room for that as I've just been exploring various systems (trying to find rebel bases to join them but I've been to like 30 systems and haven't found one yet).
If I leave the system and come back later will the ship still be there or does it despawn after a time?

The ship will still be there even if you leave and come back later. Derelicts will drift infinitely if given any momentum, and can be destroyed, but they never despawn.

thanks, is there a cheap ship with a large cargo hold that would be good for getting stranded yachts? I've found a couple of those but didn't bother pick them up so as long as I'm putting together a salvage ship I wanted to get one large enough to pick them up.

an Ogre is possibly the cheapest "Frigate" size ship that would do the job, at least that I have found in mine recently, has around 90 cargo capacity and only costs about 30,000 credits? you could do it in a Hauler Corvette (that also has 100 warp towage and a built in tractor beam) so you wouldn't have to actually pick up the yacht in your storage, although the Hauler has around 60 capacity so could collect a shuttle/yacht and still tow another ship on top of that. You will need extra Warp Towage though to drag larger ships back to a station

thanks a bunch, final question, how do I put a smaller ship into my larger ship's cargo hold. Grabbed an ogre and took it next to one of the smaller ships but no idea how to take it on board? do you need a certain piece of equipment or something else?

Either use tractor beam to pull to your ship or just "bump" into it like any other floating resource.

tractor beam worked, for some reason when I tried running into it it just damaged the ship and sent it flying off, reloaded and got a tractor beam and was able to get it onboard that way. Guess it was just being wonky. Did get a couple nice new starter ships now though.

The Theseus is a pretty cheap ship, less than 100k and 280 cargo size by default.

The Theseus is a must have ship. It's cheap and will serve the purpose you enquired. It' super useful as a portable station stash too. Instead of constantly having to go back to earlier sectors to get the iron, microchips, and other stuff from different stations, you can consolidate your stuff inside it and either manually travel outward or add it to you fleet temporarily and have it warp to you. Sadly it takes only 2 passengers.

Wait so that small derelict I knocked into deep dead space days ago is still drifting?
Does that sector still have a chance to spawn more derelicts?

as far as i know, there are no respawns for ships or distress signals. Only ancient relics and debris fields respawn.

To find in which system?

Or no better a list of abandoned ships and in which system you can find them.
Just like in X 3 Terran Conflict.

Sectors are randomly generated so there is no guarantee at all. You can even abuse save/reload to keep regenerating them and get the stuff you want. On the other hand, you can just hop around 'new' stations and you'll eventually have 10x Theseuses chilling in your fleet.
