Edit: Beside the tinhead stations :)
The trick I read on the forum is that you need to find a venghi controlled sector that's under attack by a fleet of rebels (on the map you see the little explosions in the sector). If you find one of those, supposedly one of the nearby sectors (within about 10 parsecs) should have a CoT base in it. I tried this out myself and indeed, there it was.
Basically this. I was asked to join them after I blew up my first Venghis base..
This is hilarious.. because I have a CoT base 2 jumps from my spawn sector. It was one of the first sectors I cleared lol.
I'm a bit surprised not enough people think about that :)
yeah the CoT are hard to find, no wonder they have the best crew and ships in the game.
Find a conflict zone where a CoT fleet is assaulting a Venghi base. From there, search all nearby Pitch Black sectors. IThe nearest Pitch Black sector will probably have a Rebel Base. It's that easy.
Because thats not how its presented in the game. In the game it makes it seem like the only option is to find a base and make a choice. At no point does it say blowing them up is a shortcut to making that decision.
Im just finding this out too. I made the same exact complaint. Every system was Venghi or something else so choosing CoT meant that I had to first find their base, or at least thats what I thought until this thread.
Its not obvious and its confusing for new players. If you Google this mission youll see that people have issues with this very thing. Why make such an early game mission where you have to choose a side and one of those sides is "hidden" and the other is all over the place.
At the beginning of the game you fight mostly pirates and do missions for Venghi since they are all over the place then out of the blue you get a mission to side against them from a faction youve never heard? Its not designed well. Ive had that mission sitting uncleared for my entire playthrough so far.
Why on Earth would I make half the universe hate me for some nobodies who have barely any stations.
