First, you can only check prices for an item by mouse hovering over it. So you either need to be at a station selling one or have at least one on your ship.
Second, it doesn't show you everywhere you've found that trades the thing, only the lowest and highest price places. I'm pretty sure it only updates when you land at a station (which is generally fine as there's no AI trading to modify anything in your absence afaik).
Third (and I'm not sure if this is still the case, but it was 2 days before launch), it doesn't remove blown up stations from the codex. If your "lowest price" for a good is in a station that no longer exists, you no longer know where the lowest price is. It's rare to happen, but it's a pain in the behind...
I'm hoping the planned economy updates will bring some more tools to the floor ^^
