Need warp drive to leave starting area?

Just started playing so this is a noob question.

I want to leave the starting area of sectors, but there doesn't seem to be any warp lanes leading out to new places. By starting area, I mean the initial cluster of sectors where the player starts that are all connected by warp lanes. I out level the area and I'm trying to find higher level sectors.

Are there hidden warp lanes that you can't see on the galaxy map? Or is it that I need to get a warp drive in order to go to all these unconnected sectors (making warp drives a necessity)

There should be a warp gate you can use, unless there is no other systems connected to your starting area, explore the area a little and remove the fog of war to see if there is a warp gate that is connected to another system

You need a warp drive to go anywhere that isn't connected by warp gates. So yes if you outleveled your area, it's time to install a warp drive and warp in, you can uninstall it after if you want the space but you're gonna have to reinstall it if you need to enter another unconnected sector.

When you start playing there is a scout mission in the station that gives you a free warp drive.

Thanks for the reply. I had just figured everything was connected by jump gates the way Escape Velocity and Endless sky (mostly) are.

Yes.
They're easy to get tho, you can probably just buy one in a sector that isn't right next to the starting one.

Since you just started playing and if you decided to warp, and you're still low level, those enemies in higher sector will one shot you.
