Why can't it be? I'm still a n00b lol.
Fast travel is not needed in this game imo, its not a fixed map so nothing is forcing you 1,000 parsecs from home, so if something drew you out that far, you should be able to make the return trip worth the time as well. I've definitely gone in straight lines for 20+ jumps in a dreadnought and then thought "oh, no. What have I done? I'm going to be waitng all day for warp recahrges" but grabbing a big bag of relics in the way home usually sooths the irritation.
Part of the game challenge is the warp recharge time, combined with its cost. Not a lot of games have that, usually just one or the other , and a fast travel system would negate that entirely aside from New system exploration. It would take out a lot of fun just to save people from the entirely avoidable situation of flying far from home. Just my 2 cents
