Plasma Torpedo?
Okay, so I picked up the BadBoy, a Children of Terra corvette class gunship. It has 2 special weapon mounts that get 'Torpedo Damage: +50%'. The only weapons I've seen called 'torpedo' (as opposed to the various missiles on offer) is the Plasma Torpedo. These things do massive damage, but they move at a snail pace and blow up right in your face. My ship is faster than the torpedo's, and actually trying to use them in combat without blowing myself up seems damn near impossible.

Am I missing something here? Are there other 'torpedo' weapons that can make use of these bonuses, without having an absolutely useless speed and range? Or do I need to just use other weapons, rather than these, which are eating up 4 of my 9 total available weapon space.

No, only "plasma torpedoes" deal torpedo damage.

The thing to know is that, like most weapons, they gain all the speed of your ship; but unlike other weapons, they have a multi-second lifetime. So if you're moving at 100, they'll be moving at 100 for several seconds, outranging all other weapons in the game. The trick is to get speed, launch them from a distance, and then turn away so you aren't there when they go off.

You're missing that the torpedo 'object' launches with your momentum and so uses its 'speed X out to range Y' as a fuse. This means the base/raw 5 speed 15 range gives you three seconds.

Two beginner lessons:
1) Fire while at full boost *then* IMMEDIATELY slam the brakes. Watch the distance it travels on your radar.

2) fly a little backwards when you fire; see if like mines you can get a chaser to trip on it.

few ways to use torpedoes, they get speed from ships speed, and crafting is the best way to fit them to a ship. either go fast and slam on the breaks right after you fire, run from enemies, slam on the breaks, fire and then take off as fast as you can, or fire them right before you hard turn at least 90 degrees. It may sound absurd at first, and some people (like me) die a looooot getting the hang of it, but I've made successful torpedo boats out of every size ship from shuttle to dreadnought. Not everyone likes them, most of the higher tech level weapons are very niche and situational, so if you find yourself not getting it or just not getting into it, it may be a matter of practice, or just a matter of taste. Most higher tech level weapons are also meant to be samples, an appetizer for crafting something more suited to a ship you like. This goes for Doom Cannon, Peacemaker, Ultra Laser, Fast Piercing Laser. I will say some of those high end weapons in orange grade are hard to out-craft, for raw DPS, but there are other traits that make up for DPS such as projectile speed, range, not to mention custom weapons scale better the more cores you add. As much as I forced myself to learn torpedo style, I definitely prefer other weapons, either beams or fast projectile plasma cannons, but there are a lot of players, particularly those who prefer yachts and corvettes, who use torpedoes often.

I love that all the mods instantly chime in on torpedo chat haha

Well, I certainly appreciate the insight. Don't think I'm gonna stick with the BadBoy long term, but at least now I have an idea of what I'm supposed to do with them until I jump into a different ship.

Side note - I have had multiple play throughs and have debated about my favorite tier ships ie shuttle yacht corvette etc ...

anyways badboy is my favorite corvette - 50 equipment slot, stealth (worth 3 slots and also the best stealth item compared to 'store' bought.

Badboy is a great vette, but I usually just use them as mining or repair ships in my dreadnought's hangar. Having high equipment space and several forward hardpoints to mitigate heat means they can really sling it in battle or vs rocks, but they are pretty big so they aren't hard to hit either. Not a lot of people go tank style in a corvette, but its the prime candidate. Not many vettes compare to them in repair and mining roles, except maybe Guardians since they are smaller, they get hit less while repairing me during combat and have similar weapon capacity.
