Citrouille has just a few zones with a handful of levels in each, and just a single boss fight. The levels are well-designed, and there are new threats introduced in each new area. However, it’s an extremely short game, and after a player has beaten it, there’s nothing to demand a second visit. The only sop towards longevity is a battle mode for up to four players that switches things up so that players are competing with one another instead of cooperating. It’s a decent twist on the formula, but with just four possible characters and a small number of maps, it feels a bit threadbare.

Despite its limited ambitions, Citrouille manages to nail the basics, and that’s worth noting. The controls are tight, the systems all work together perfectly, and other than those damned salamanders, when players fail it feels like a lapse in skill rather than unfair design. It may be inessential, but it’s inessential in a winning way.

If some of you are wondering why this game looks familiar, that's because it's a clone of a little-known arcade game called Rodland. And it's a really good clone at that. Good graphics, fair difficulty, a lot of modes to choose from. good PC version, and a nice set of multiplayer options. It even tries to do some things differently from Rodland, like the magic spell mechanic, which I think is neat. I haven't gotten through much of the story so far, but it seems competent enough. I don't like how the OST is royalty-free tracks from Kevin Macleod, but I'm willing to give that a pass since the game is fairly high quality besides that. It's the next best thing to a Rodland sequel besides that Soldam remake, honestly. Highly recommended if you want Rodland, but with cute witches, or just want a quality puzzle platformer to play.

Artistically great but doesn't feel very "arcade classic" to me. Very loose and imprecise in terms of movement and hitboxes, too many buttons, often have to squint and scan the screen for the one tile you're missing. Just not that into it!!!

Yet another game with the #1 platformer issue: awful collision detection. I can't even begin to understand why it is so difficult, but it apparently is. Too bad.

It's not Lode Runner, but it's not bad.

Citrouille is a single-screen action game with a ladder-building mechanic inspired by Rod Land. Since there are no restrictions on when or where you can build ladders, you have a lot of freedom of movement. Combined with a relatively high game speed and random AI, it's clear that Citrouille is less about strategy and more about reflexes and adaptation. This is not in itself bad, but for how unique the ladder mechanic is, it's less deep than I had hoped.

The enemy variety is good. Some move randomly. Some chase. Some have projectile attacks. Some spawn other enemies. And so on.

The graphics are a mixed bag. The colorful detailed art is great, but it's far harder to read the screen than in say, Lode Runner Legacy. I realize not every game can have the cleanest visuals, but it always pays to consider how easily the player can see what's going on. There were several times I failed to plant a flower, and needed several seconds to find the empty dirt block. It's also unfortunate that the fast-moving enemies can use teleporters, which sometimes leads to a cheap instant death.

The Story Mode is short but challenging. Having cleared it with all characters, I can't say the different spells change the gameplay enough to warrant replaying it. But the gameplay is engaging enough that I didn't mind.

I was unable to spend more than a little time in the VS mode, but I think with 3-4 players it'd make a great party game.

Overall, I rate Citrouille a 7/10. It doesn't reach its full potential, but it's polished enough to still be enjoyable.

Really the only redeemable factor is the art style, it's great and it's what drew me into buying it. The game is super basic, and that's fine for some game's, but the game has to have SOLID mechanics for simplistic games to work well and I just don't feel like that's the case here. Also the soundtracks are literally just royalty free Kevin MacLeod songs, which I can not overstate how awful the songs make the game feel to sit through. I'm sure we've all unwillingly heard our fair share of these songs, and truthfully I don't feel like sitting through the rest of the game listening to it.

Citrouille. It's made by Lumen Section and published by Plug In Digital. This publisher has often been a partner for good indie developers. Especially among them, Lumen Section is a hidden gem. This game has been designed so that the player can experience well the developer's affection for the game. This game is full of cuteness and loveliness. Let's have a look.

Gameplay Style. This game has a modern sense about classic games. Simple but challenging and addictive. In addition, It's more shining with graphic artwork and animation effects. Each playable character has its own features. Playing with these cute witches is a really pleasant experience. Moreover, there are some game modes to enjoy. Especially with the latest update, a customizable mode has also been added. We need to actively welcome these new content updates. The developer's passion makes the game more valuable.

Of course, it is not perfect. This game may require some adjustment. Some levels are quite tricky and frustrating to the player. But it does not ruin the game. It would be better if some levels were modified. The game is great overall. It would be even more fun to play with friends. Regardless of its actual use, the existence of multiplayer mode in the game gives users peace of mind. Although it is often played alone, the possibility of enjoying together is always open for us.
