Naming ??? Monster

When I first caught a special ??? monster it said that I could do something to generate a name or something. I'm terrible with names but I can't find this option. Does anyone know how to do it?

If playing on PC, go to your party and press 1 on the desired monster you wish to rename. I'm not sure what you'd press if you're using a controller though. Would also recommend to swap it to the lead of your party before renaming as I have seen some people point out that for some reason when renaming a monster it only changes the name of your leading monster.

I kept getting the same ??? monster repeatedly in the same area. I dunno if it bugged out but the second one I caught only had 1 skill and never learnt any more unlike the first. I didn't bother capturing the third one So I guess it's only worth catching it once.

I have the game on pc and switch, but it's having issues with the new Switch Oled which i've emailed them about so i'll stick to pc until it's hopefully sorted.

The ??? monsters are found in the wild hybrids, basically the same way you can breed 2 totally different monsters , the same type can show up in the wild very rarely. I'm not sure if it is like net eggs and they are determined from other peoples breeding or if the game just has a chance to spawn them.

It tells you "you are the first to discover this monster so you can name it" but that is just flavor text since you might have already bred the same monster yourself and certainly someone else has in another game, but it is cool none the less.

Oh duh , just realized you must have been in a card dungeon where all the enemies are ??? , that's why you kept seeing them. The hybrids are different so ignore that part.

Nope, I was right outside the farm training my starter. Alas I have no idea how to random name it on the switch but it's handy on the pc. Thank you for the help ^_^

Monster Crown is having some graphical issues atm on the new Switch Oled but i've reported it. A few bits have been fixed already. It's just due to the bigger screen probably.

On pc with a controller the auto name button is L shoulder , maybe it's something similar on switch , if that doesn't work just press every button except the ones you know are accept and cancel.

Trying to name stuff without a keyboard is a pain so I usually just go with the auto name unless I really like the monster and give them a nickname,

I've tried every key so far and no luck alas. I wish i could bring the popup back up again that spoke about it, lol. I did read it but my memory is like swiss cheese.
Yeah, I suck at names so auto name is awesome.
