Local Game Unconnectable?
Hey, just trying to get a friend of mine to join my local game - Set up Hamachi and everything but unfortunately we can't seem to connect to one anothers' games.

Do we still have to set up a dedicated server via the game files? The R31 Singleplayer update doesn't go into very much detail into the "How" to join local games, we're getting very frustrated with this.

Hello!

We've extensively tested with Hamachi and it works fine (the local server running on another PC within the same Hamachin VLAN appears in PLAY->Multiplayer->LAN menu).

1) You need to ensure that the PCs are reachable with Hamachi. Right-click on your friend's PC in Hamachi, you will find the diagnostics option there. Usually, it detects what's causing the connection issues.

2) Sometimes the LAN broadcast may still not reach other PCs over VLAN (so the game server will not appear in the LAN servers list). In that case, you can try connecting directly to the PC running the local game server. To do so use PLAY->Multiplayer->Custom servers menu and add address manually. Use the IP address from Hamachi tool for the PC which is hosting the game server.

3) If everything is properly configured, you need to ensure that the game server is allowed with Firewall. (add <game installation folder>\Binaries\Shared\DotNetCore\dotnet.exe in the firewall whitelist).

Do we still have to set up a dedicated server via the game files?
No, the dedicated server is not necessary. Practically it's the same server runtime but more complex to configure as it doesn't ship with prerequisites and it's intended for hosting on VPS or bare metal hardware in datacenters.

Technically your friends should be able to reach your local game server (same as dedicated server) over internet (without Hamachi) if you setup port forwarding rule on your router (6000 UDP external port, 6000 UDP internal port, use your LAN IP address (from the network card; not a Hamachi one) for the internal address in the rule). Router reboot is usually necessary to apply the changes. The problem though is that port-forwarding sometimes simply doesn't work. So I would suggest experimenting with Hamachi and see if you can make it work.

Regards!
