It's never been a matter of being lazy, TT Games annouced from the very beginning that they never wanted to have online co-op in favor of couch co-op to encourage people to find IRL friends/family to play with.

I'm kinda glad they didn't cuz they can focus on other things. They really aren't that rich and what resources they have are better put elsewhere.
