Investigate and gears

I'm still only on my first route which is Stan's. At the pub when Josh wasn't there three gears turned up with the word Investigate! in a blue box but clicking anything just moved to the next scene (which was around the time I ran into Josh having dealt with the terrorists or whatever). Was I supposed to be able to do something here? Or maybe in a different route or after replaying it?
