So i just ran it on a Virtual Machine with Windows XP.
Although it was back on 10 when i tried it, i was pretty sure i did the compatibility change XP SP3 and still had no sound, but i followed that with with SP2 and the reduced colour setting and it's working fine.
Though i have the GOG version.
I gave you an award on the guide!
And as for the sequels:
The Punic Wars - A Clash Of Two Empires
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Excalibur-Games-The-Punic-Wars/dp/B00025FFMQ
Imperium III - The Great Battles Of Rome
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperivm:_Great_Battles_of_Rome
Edit: it's on Steam!?!?! https://store.steampowered.com/app/752580/Imperivm_RTC__HD_Edition_Great_Battles_of_Rome/
Although i don't believe either of them are available on Steam, nor GOG, i have played them on my Virtual Win XP setup.
Managed to fish both from eBay many years ago! Quality was never as good as Celtic Kings tho!
It's hard getting old games running on new machines 😂
I have played both years ago, i had to get em from eBay as they were not widely released, mostly just in Spain, so you had to use language files from Celtic Kings so you could play them in English!
I preferred the 3rd one, Imperium: Great Battles of Rome, as it had alot more variance, even if the graphics were not as good! But i'll have to buy that HD version now!
And no problem, thanks for the guide!!
Yeah, i used https://www.virtualbox.org/ installed XP onto it, and just play my old games that way!
But it's easier if i don't have too do that!
I've just jumped right in, though i don't feel like anything is "bigger" from a custom game point of view, and i can't have anymore AI, stuck with the same amount (1 of each).
Overall for the current price it's worth the purchase if you wanted to play one of the sequels to Celtic Kings, though i'm only 5mins in so i can't say anything about bugs and such... however i wouldn't want to pay more as it's only HD at that and i don't feel like i can have bigger battles, but we will see!
If it was full 1440p and it felt bigger with more AI, i'd defo be willing to pay more.
For those who are curious, Imperium: Great Battles of Rome, is basically Celtic Kings with more nations, Rome, or Imperial Rome in this case, is basically the same, Gaul is too, except they no longer have Viking Lords, as they have been given to the Germania.
You can upgrade your Heroes as they level up too... other than that, you can jump right in and play it like Celtic Kings.
And again, it's not a "new" game as such, just a HD version of the 3rd Sequel (after Punic Wars) to Celtic Kings that was released well over a decade ago, and was only available in Spain? So you had to buy it on eBay.
Honestly i click an enemy hero and the archers either do whatever, run off or the entire formation moves. Seems like they specifically tried to prevent players taking out heroes too early, and made the gameplay worse.
"Improvements" yea it isn't an improvement over how it was.
Balancing wise, Liberati were somewhat OK to use in the past, now it's too high a cost, you'll have one at lvl 12 and you get new ones at lvl 12.. they do go up but it seems to like skip it at times, so it just ends up amplifying the cost, and they fall like wheat to a scythe so you start wondering what the point is.
Yet Elephants are such a bane, you feel like you have to dedicate an entire army to a handful, and then more are on your door step. It's like Viking Lords in this game, except you get more elephants, and they are only lvl 1..
