He may picked up the gunners from one of the boxes on the map and for the resources.. Did you upgrade yours?
I usually upgrade my first iron as soon as possible (when i hit my first 60 oil) then my oil is either upgraded before any building goes down or directly after it, the next iron follows after the first 3 to 4 units.
And resource crates... try to get as much as possible while i value oil higher ;)
Resources are everything. Crates/barrels are one-time boost in resources that are faster to get than mines/pumps in a pinch. Depending on whether you want your workshop or your barracks first, you should grab the resources you need for those first few units first. Infantry love iron while mechs are more oil hungry. Mechs also love iron, and are generally expensive to field and mass in numbers.
Secret tech is to build advanced workshop and put out a Gunship. It's good vs pretty much everything so long as you protect it and micro it effectively. You could always grab it as your R2 as well. They're pricey, but they kill mechs, infantry, and heroes. They deal heavy damage to everything and out-range almost everything.
