Moreover a multiplayer game in early access is very likely to fail because people come check it out, play for a bit, then leave thinking "I'll check again some time later when there are more features". Then you get bombarded by negative reviews of people saying "nobody plays multiplayer, game dead". If you can maintain a massive playerbase throughout the entirery of early access you're good but for a relatively niche project like HROT the multiplayer modes would be dead. Hell nobody plays DUSK PvP either, even soon after the release nobody did.
Duskworld (dusk multiplayer) didnt really fail. There are lots of people who gets together and plays it everyday and devs already said that they are working on Dusk co-op. I finished dusk a million times and currently its multiplayer is what makes people play it again. It adds replayability which extends the gameplay time by a lot.
Allowing players to create their own lobbies and play with their friends should be enough, we dont need super complicated multiplayer stuff. But for now, its best for devs to relax and enjoy the joy of creating the best FPS game of 2023
No doubt about that man.
So I just looked and there are two servers with no players on them. I'm not familiar with DUSK multiplayer community but having to get together on discord to get a game going doesn't sound like "lots of people" to me. That's with a much larger following than what HROT currently has.
That's hype. DUSK is 5 years old though. HROT is fresh out of the oven. At least give it time.
I'm not saying it's not worthy or too hard to implement, I'm just puzzled by that commenter who "doesn't understand" how some of these games don't have multiplayer modes "by default" as if it was a checkbox.
Very probably, it would end up being a mediocre fps with mediocre multiplayer. That's what usually happens when the devs bite more than they can chew. This way, it can be an excellent singleplayer fps.
