Better than boltgun? This game has also struck my attention cause of the chasm comparison.
Op you could of fleshed out your opinion a bit better than sound and graphic preferences.
They are really weak sounding and quiet comapred to everything else.
It's not satisfying at all to kill stuff with these weapons.
Even PSX Medal of Honor had more oomph with the gun sounds..
I'm weird like that.
Silenced weapons are fine as long as the sound is decent they don't have to be super loud to sound satisfying.
EDIT:
The guns in HROT are both TOO QUIET and VERY UNDERHELMING.
You get it what i mean now? It's not just volume issue.
But combination of volume and the overall sound design.
They sound too weak. Like toy guns. Especially the shotgun.
Cranking up their volume alone wouldn't help. Redesign of these sounds would be needed for them to not sound so weak and unsatisfying.
Yes the game is fun it just has ♥♥♥♥ gun sounds that's all.
Not saying doom is bad was very impressed by the atmosphere for the time in ultimate doom. Just that the guns are very dull and sound unnatural. Its not just about how loud they are but how they sound. Soldier of Fortune, or Fear are good examples of a powerhouse shotgun.
Doom2 double barrel did sound very good for its time. I'm just more into the quake era. Fav one from the doom era is heretic but you're just throwing around magic so hard to mess up those sound effects.
