Disagree. The Gelgoog was more-or-less on par with the gundam, Same armaments, beam sabre, rifle and shield. Amuro was just a MUCH better pilot by that point. Char had to have a ridiculous Newtype super weapon to get a draw. Kinda the point. When they get similar suits Amuro absolutely clowns on him both times. The Goog and the Sazabi both get absolutely demolished.
If we're talking Char's Counterattack, ♥♥♥♥ no, man. We're talking 13 years of experience piloting several different suits and fighting different wars, with a suit made exclusively with his capabilities in mind. Hell, Char even HANDED him the ability to make the damn thing, knowing full well he'd be able to completely utilize the Nu Gundam's potential. Char was no longer at the point where he far surpassed Amuro, both mentally and physically.
In most Gundam series, it's the suit carrying the MC pilot. Unicorn/Narrative being a perfect example of this. It's even noted in Narrative that Jona is JUST an above average pilot, and it isn't until he awakens from Cyber Newtype to genuine (similar to Banagher) that he starts to fully make use of the Narrative's Psycho-plates. Char's Counterattack is NOT that. The Sazabi gets trounced and it's a testament to Char and Amuro's relationship by that point.
Besides the point, though, I'm good with what we've got with SDGBA. Don't think they're gonna expand much more on this title rather than a new one in years' time.
Of course there should be "grunt" suits in a Gundam game. AYFKM?
Gundam isn't a GD battle shonen fanboy tier list franchise where the "protag" has special powers to get to the end of the story and finish the big bad. Gundam (most of it anyway) is a depiction of futuristic warfare.
Saying GM's and Gelgoog's shouldn't be in a Gundam game is like saying M1A2's and T-72's don't belong in a tank warfare sim about the US and the Soviets.
Older Gundam titles were all over this, Blue Destiny, Rise form the ashes, Lost war chronicles...now the build fighter generation wants to turn this into battle shonen...good God. Artdink has already successfully done the "Too much work!" excuse in their older Gundam battle titles with almost every suit depicted with their own weapons systems. In the Battle games, grunt suits were fun, and often had moves more powerful suits didn't. In most of Gundam, the idea is that any of the big suits can buy the farm to a grunt, because the difference in power isn't as great as assumed...take a stray beam in the wrong place and you're toast. Pilots like Yazan Gable terrorized all the space magic pilots in their cry suits (Give me a Hambrabi Artidink. NOW). The best scene in Unicorn ep.1 was a Stark Jegan Pilot making Marida sweat.
Grunt suits make up for lack of pure power with versatility. These are futuristic weapons systems, not dude Luffy beats up before facing Kaido. I think this game doesn't lend itself well to doing grunt suits justice, but maybe the next title (if there is one) will get us there.
Grunt Suits Matter! Grunt Suits Matter! Grunt Suits Matter!
