can you be a smuggler?
As a secondary question ... is it feasible to play, advance and enjoy the game without having to do the combat but enjoy avoiding it via stealth, going silent and system use?

I mean, you can buy contraband and you can sell contraband. You can avoid authority vessels. So yeah, you can be a smuggler.

Totally! Yes! i got a new ship recently without fireing a single torp. Bounty hunting net a good income as I see, but avoiding combat is kind of main nishe of this game. Your can go about trading, smugling, transporting cargo/passangers. In my whole 23 hours into the game i didn't had to fight even once.

I mean, I wasn't forced to, in order to progress in game. Of course there are still pirates trying to attack you for your sweet cargo pods. I was assaulted many times (but wasn't particulary sneaky about my travels, so there is that)

If you watch the videos on the game's website, there is a video explaining the stealth mechanics of the game. I would watch it, with the information it gives, you can play the game until you are rich without ever getting a weapons system or even seeing a torpedo. The game was marketed as a stealth fighter. You can even play as a scavenger, hiding in the nebulae with emcon mode, watching a pirate kill a ship or two, and take everything the pirate deemed not worth their time, then go back into the shadows to pick more leftovers of another battle. You just need good batteries and an arm module to grab the cargo.

I would like to hijack and bump this topic just to say that smugling fines are a joke. I am making like 5000 credits on my very easy smuggling route, and they only fine me 300. Penalties for smugling should be... rethinked and rebalanced.

Also... after jumping, its really sad to spawn on top of authority vessel, and really being unable to react (while systems boot up) before he fines you :(

I think it was Babylon 5 were they said a ship is at its weakest when it emerges from hyperspace.
Its better than jumping on top of a pirate and have incomming torpedos before your nav computer as booted . :steamfacepalm:
