BONEWORKS

BONEWORKS

View Stats:
Game crashes at launch or after height/floor set up.
I want to start off by saying I'm using Quest 2 and Virtual Desktop, in case that's the problem, but people have been saying it 100% works so I don't think it is.

So 90% of the time I get to the part where SteamVR runs it and says "Playing Boneworks" but I'm stuck on "waiting" in VR and a black screen on my monitor, and then it crashes. About 3 times, I got lucky and the game booted up, but after doing the height/floor set up, clicking "save settings" and seeing the loading screen, it crashes.

I've already tried: reinstalling the game, updating my drivers, disabling firewall, and verifying the game files.

Is the game actually crashing or is it shutting down or is oculus software shutting down (Causing game to shut down). These are actually very very very different things.

Likely possible issues:
A. Not enough allocated Windows Virtual Memory or hard drive space for said memory cache.
B. Third party software issue (while Virtual Desktop should work perfectly fine, if you have oculus tray tools or utility tools installed, these three may conflict in unusual ways).
C. You're describing a shutdown at the moment the game is writing to save file location, if you have some anti-virus software that could be shutting the game down this may be the issue.

I've disabled my anti-virus, but I haven't been able to boot up the game to see if that stopped the shut down after the set up. I don't have any Unity tools, but I do have the Oculus app? Could that be an issue? I have the game installed to a separate hard drive so A shouldn't be an issue unless from some reason it's trying to save on my C drive, but I haven't had a Steam game do that ever.

Edit: Ok, so I verified SteamVR files, and it had to replace 2 of them, and so after that I try to run the game and I get this message: "the application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142)" from vrpatheg.exe.

Edit #2: I've ran the Boneworks Exe as admin and then showed up. "the instruction at 0x00007ffEBC1AF074 referenced memory at 0x0000000000000 the memory could not be written"

Edit #3: I got an unknown system error. I'm getting pretty frustrated so I'm going to take a break from trying to run this, but if you or anybody else could help me, I'd super appreciate it because I was dying to play this game a couple days ago, and now I feel like hitting a real person with a real hammer. *not really*

Edit #4: Because I hate myself, and I couldn't leave it alone, I went to Event Viewer and found these:

But I'm not very techy, so none of this makes sense to me. Can anybody translate this to layman's terms?

well you seem to be looking at a couple separate issues. One of which I can help you with.

You were first describing absolutely an issue with windows virutal memory. When I say you need enough harddrive space, I am saying you need enough harddrive space on your WINDOWS INSTALL harddrive for the virtual memory cache. It will be ideal and run the best if the game is also installed on your primary drive but not necessary. You do however need to allocate more windows virtual memory on that primary drive and make sure there is enough free space on the drive to cover that.

Second issue also looks like it has to do with not enough memory but it looks like multiple applications are requesting the memory resources.

I spent the day cleaning up my hard drive and now it works. Thank you!
