Same. There are weapons all around that area and it seems like its impossible to break the barrels with your hands, seems like you have to actually smash them by throwing them down. But when I saw the destructible vases i assumed there were going to be some items. I know there is more than just one weapon in those rooms. At least two.
My one note on any enemy (and this goes across multiple games) is that enemies often get too close and that can make some of the fights feel clumsy. With enemies like nullmen it can make sense since they're clumsy themselves. But with Fords its a bit off.

I had no idea there was a sword you could use.
I laughed out loud watching that omg. How did you get a pistol in that level?
I used the dev gun to spawn it in. I'm glad you found it funny! c:
All you have to do is run away. And you can use the gravity gun on them.
You look like you’ve progressed pretty far. How do you get the dev gun?
As for the barrels, you are not guaranteed a sword. Barrels have a chance to spawn random melee weapons when broken. My last run through only resulted in a spade, for example.
