Tips to reduce Motion Sickness
Boneworks can cause VR sickness even to those that have build strong VR legs. I'm one of the many that despite having no issue in all other VR games, Boneworks hits me hard with nausea. I've been testing to see what I can do to reduce the aspects of the game that are the most likely culprits for causing the disconnect between the eyes and inner ear.

1. Run a fresh Room Setup
Over time the floor calculation may be off in SteamVR. Running a new room setup with controllers on the floor will ensure the closest 1:1 matchup of the game floor and the real floor.

2. Calibrate floor with your controllers
When you start the game and it asks to setup the floor, lay down and set the controllers on your real floor while wearing them. Raise the controller a few inches then back down to the floor. If nothing happens, lower the setting until you start to push off the floor. When it is too low, the controller will try to push through the floor and the physics based body will push off, also moving the camera. This is a major cause for VR sickness. What you need to find is the lowest setting before the controller pushes off the floor.

3. Enable linear motion
The game defaults to an acceleration based movement system. If you are VR sensitive, this is a major thing to avoid. Change the setting to linear. This will match other VR games your already adjusted to where the movement is a simple on or off.

4. Be careful when grabbing objects
When grabbing objects, take care to only grab the object you are after and do so directly. You have to be deliberate when reaching for objects to avoid hitting the surface they are sitting on or surrounded by. If your arm or another part of your physics body hits the surface, your head/camera will push off. This micro-movement of the camera while your real life head is still is my guess why VR sickness for this game is so huge even for those with otherwise no problem with other VR titles.

5. Do not get close to walls
Same as 4. If you brush against a wall or hard surface, your physics body will resist and your head/camera will make a micro-movement while your real head is stationary. Sometimes this is unavoidable so just be prepared an accept when you do have to do this when climbing, etc, to take a short break right afterwards to readjust.

Hopefully the devs rethink having the camera move so often and so easily when pushing off objects and surfaces. But until then, try out these tips and see if they improve your experience. And add in any you've discovered that can help us all be able to better enjoy this game.

FOLKS!

It's like getting Your sea legs, BUT! Settings are extremely important with this.

Your height setting is crucial. The scale of the world and how fast things move when your perspective changes has a major impact. Your height setting should be as accurate as possible.

1. Make sure everything seems the right scale to you.

2. Bend down and touch the floor making sure it is in the same place in VR as it is in RL.

If these two aren't correct check your settings.

Once you have calibrated those try then selecting the seated mode and play sitting down using the snap turns 45/10. Use this method for a while and then simply pop open the settings to toggle from seated to standing as you feel the need.

I recommend starting seated and work your way up to standing. This way you can learn how to play these types of games from a seated position. Turning the world around you rather than turning yourself. I works quite well I can assure you.

Enjoy the half-life 3 tech demo!

***Bonus pro tip: You don't need to be grabbing everything. Just gently touching things moves alot. Your way stronger than you think ;)

****Bonus cool story bro: I was at a dinner the other day, and VR came up. Everyone at the table says they can only play beatsaber due to motion sickness. Here I am unable to really defend myself (or VR), with thousands of hours in VR, struggling myself at first with boneworks lol.

My tip for motion sickness is take breaks 5-10 minutes after you start feeling sick, wait till you feel better and jump straight back in. That should stop you being a little ♥♥♥♥♥

Hi there,

I would also welcome regular joystick movement which enables you to look and aim a gun forward and strafe at the same time.

Cheers!
I found out there is a setting that lets you strafe left or right, go to settings and then controller, i have mine set to Virtual Crouching ENABLED, TURN MODE -SMOOTH, TURN RATE - 4, Loco Direction - Head, and Loco Curve - LINEAR
this should allow you to move the left stick to the left or right and be able to strafe left or right while moving or aiming a gun. i want to mess around with the Loco Direction and try to take it off HEAD cause I dont like that it moves me forward where i'm looking, messes me up sometimes

Dont get close to walls? Thats a ridiculous way to play the game. If that's how you have to play it then the game is effectively broken.
Do you normally run into walls? Does running into those walls not put off your stride IRL?

If you find that you are suffering from head-bobbing when moving, set your height up by a notch or two in the calibration - it happens when your height is calibrated too low, causing your in game body to be forced to it's extremes (and moved by them) when you move.
Those extra notches gives your virtual head the leway to match itself to your IRL head without hitting those limits.

A better set of tips is to rid yourself of vr sickness forever. It's easy.

Play game until you are close to your limit and stop. Take a break till you feel better. Play game again. Do this for a few days (or less) and you will grow your sea legs and never get sick again.

Sea sickness works the same way. You need to let your body get used to it and jumping on a big boat that's gonna be out to sea for hours is a bad idea. Start small and build.

This was the first game to make me nauseous (except a 5 second attempt at a roller coaster ride...) so I had to refund. I'm now wondering if I should have persisted.

Dunno what you're talking about, I get 20 FPS and no motion sickness

I am a VR tester, and have done games testing for over 6 years. I find this game extremely motion sickness inducing. As well as baron, finicky and quite frankly, boring. Just tried to get a refund from Steam after 3h58 mins of play time as i said it was giving me motion sickness and it has been declined as it is outside of the 2 hours maximum. I had barely got out of the tutorial at this point really, as i was trying to fully get to grips with the controls and settings etc. I am livid!

I use an Oculus headset and will make sure to stay on their platform from now on. I haven't had a good experience with Steam since i was locked out of Half Life 2 on release date for 3 hours when people who had downloaded it and cracked it were playing instantly. Here was a chance for them to win me over. Nope! Poor game design, poor platform to release on. Poor experience all round. Not sure what bots or fanboys are praising this because the free games on Oculus such as Robo Recall and Echo Arena are faaaar better. :DISGRUNTLED:

I have to disagree with you, You can't say it's boring if you barely got out of the tutorial, the story will get you. I personaly had no issues with motion sickness, if you wanna stay on Oculus go ahead but steam is the best store for vr games of any kind

Haha, what? RoboRecall is not free...
And you had to wait 3 hours to play a game SIXTEEN YEARS ago and you're holding a grudge against a platform for that?
You do realise that Boneworks is just a game released on Steam and isn't a Valve game... right?

You say you've only made it out of the tutorial, yet you're dissing the game based on an incomplete experience?

If you're getting motion sick, try calibrating your height again. try setting it a little higher than you actually think you are, so your headset doesn't end up fighting your virtual body.

Why.... Are you still salty about HL2's release day?
SanekiBeko Dec 30, 2019 @ 3:24pm
I'll try these tips. I started getting motion sickness once I got out of the museum to the point I had to stop playing. Not much of a problem at all going through the tutorial.
