Story?
I just beat the game and I have no idea what the story was, can anyone explain?

This story is one that leaves more questions than answers, and a lot of explanations are heavily reliant on speculation. This is pretty much what i could gather from my playthrough.

From what i could gather, Monogon industries runs a virtual world, similar to the oasis in ready player one. You, the protagonist, got into that world after they locked it down. At first it seems that your goal is to reset the clock and fix the world. As the game progresses you slowly learn that not everything is as it seems. The AI seems to be gaining sentience, with these mysterious void creatures influencing them. Theres a lot of convoluted aspects to it, but at the end we see a view into real life of your room, and a guy in a suit along with 2 hazmat guys come in, remove your vr headset, and shoot you in the head. As the camera fades away, we can see the void creatures in your real room, implying that this void energy from the virtual world is spilling out into the real world and Monogon is attempting to control/cover it up.

It also seems that the VR headsets in the game layer like an inception dream, during one cutscene, you see your character take off his vr headset, and appear in another vr world. The VR seems to take control of your mind in a sense, as when they rip your characters headset off at the end he just goes comatose instead of snapping back to real life.

Why do the nullmen attack Ford at all? Why do headsetcrabs exist? During the MythOS portion of the game, I'm guessing nullmen attack Ford because he is using a Gammon headset, but Monogon programming their virtual headsets to also be attack crabs is questionable because of how shocking it would be for a bystander to witness this.

The dead-Ford-nullmen, or whatever they are called, seem like a glitch, but they appear between the final transition into void space. Were the dead-Fordmen and the giant headsetcrabs a last line of defense tactic programmed into the boneworks to keep things in the voidway from escaping?

Why do the nullmen go off and raise melons when they aren't programmed to do that? Is this just random code creating arbitrary action or is it an attempt at sympathetic magic - melons are used a few times to describe a smart way around an obstacle an obvious reference to "using your melon", so are void creatures trying to grow a mind to better possess these virtual bodies?

What are the security force? The other guy on the security team makes it clear that no one in Monogon can access MythOS, but if this is true, does that mean that the guys with guns riding balls are AIs? If that is true, why are they killing nullmen who are part of the same system? If they are not AIs, why do they not follow Ford into the system core? Better yet, why are they chasing Ford instead of restarting the core themselves?

Once into the Boneworks, everything starts to get super weird. Ford is surrounded by other clearly less intelligent Fords, but what does this mean? Then Ford has to fight the Ford King who baits him to fight instead of protecting himself. This seems to imply that Ford's subconscious is looping back to create the world around him and that he already knows he wants to win, but also wants to playout some boyhood fantasy of achieving greatness... I think... But why would he distract himself this way even subconsciously when he is so clearly pressed for time? The alternative is that Ford had something to do with the creation of the security systems that protects the boneworks and the Ford King is the manifestation of that security, possibly broken by his USB tool in the opening, but this doesn't make much sense unless his realization that he could achieve immortality came long after his initial work. If this is true, it means that whatever he said to convince Gammon to prepare his equipment was essentially lip service just so that he could reach the void, but either way what was he supposed to do for them?

Why did they bother shooting Ford's body? By that point, the higher ups must have known what he was doing, did they hope that he had just not fully succeeded by that point? If Ford were still in the boneworks and not in the void, would he have been pulled back to his body? And why were the others wearing hazmat suits? What hazardous material were they expecting to possibly find in the old offices?

The other security person asked Ford to "leave a way in", but as Ford, we didn't do anything that implied we opened or sealed the void, except for possibly the two doors that led to the final transition to the void, but if this was the choice, what does it mean? "Eternal Salvation" and "Certain Damnation" could have multiple meanings depending on Ford's personality. If he feared letting others reach the void could diminish his power there, he could see letting others in as certain damnation just as much as Eternal Salvation could be strictly speaking for himself. Or was it that the doors needed to actually be propped open to "leave a way in"?

Boneworks was a wild game where I didn't understand what Ford was trying to do until the cutscene at the end, but even so, these other questions are the ones keeping me up at night.

You're all digging for a meaning in the story. Maybe there is one, maybe there isn't, but I have to ask one question. What if this is just a tech demo?

Apart from that being almost completely wrong on anything but the most surface level details.
Ok... maybe not - rather it's more 90% looking at past content in a summary (no theory), 7% FNAF references, and 3% Theory which is wrong.
The Dog is not a person, for instance.

Boneworks was a wild game where I didn't understand what Ford was trying to do until the cutscene at the end, but even so, these other questions are the ones keeping me up at night.

Most of this is backed up. Some isn't, and is the community's best guess. We are not meant to know everything at this point, there is more lore to be added to the game, and there are four more games throughout which the lore is going to be spread.

Why do the Nullmen attack Ford? They're becoming sentinent through the corruption caused by drinking melonbelly (from melons fermented in the void)

Why do headsetcrabs exist? The headsets were used as the basis for the crablet piece in Swords and Spiders, a board game in mythOS. Due to how the void works, and thus MythOS, the association with the crablet piece and actual headsets created the headsets withing MythOS proper

Dead-Ford-nullmen: The Zombish are a bit of a mystery, some current theories are that they are shells left behind from Fords who have made it to the void that have decayed, or the shells of Fords that failed to make it to the void.

The king crablets are only found in the void. Things are formed from the void based on the subconscious of any beings in it. Ford is clearly thinking a lot about the crablets, and they are looming large in his head - the inflated size of the ones that appear is because of Ford's reaction to them.

Nullbodies farming melons: "Someone/somepeople from the void taught the nullbodies to ferment the melons"

Security force: The cleanup crew/omniprojectors are essentially an antivirus program. They are literal 'bots'. When the clock stopped, everything turned to ####, and they are dealing with it the best they can, by attacking anything that could be an infection - don't forget that the nullbodies are corrupted. They can't do anything about the core, because they are not programmed to be able to.

Super weird: You've used the boneworks layer to leave MythOS, but you haven't made it to the void yet, instead you have gone to FantasyLand, a game under development by the in-universe SL0 team. Like MythOS it is being built from/in the voidway, and it's the plug-room behind the throne room that you are aiming for, as that gives you access into the voidway proper, beyond the Boneworks layer and the resurrection field. The other Fords are, similar to the zombish, most likely Fords that have made it to the void, leaving shells behind. What you say about looping around is very significant, as the film Primer was a key influence on the overall story, however the fact that the voidway connects all realities is probably the cause of the multiple Fords. Ford was definitely involved in the security aspects of Boneworks - he's the Security Director for it. The realization did definitely come after MythOS was created - hence the writing on the walls - we see in Duck Season secrets the moment he realises that there is a way to exploit it, when he's talking to Hayes about making sure they can prevent Gammon from breaking in - Ford realises that he can break out. We don't know what he promised Gammon for their help. It could be that getting the USB into the server was all he needed to do for them, or he could have just done "lip service" as you suggest - we don't know.

Shooting Ford: If he hadn't made it to the void, that would have been it for him. It's quite possible they knew what he was up to and tried to stop him. It's also possible that they didn't, and wanted to stop him doing more damage - we only know about the situation from Hayes and Alora's messages, but it sounds a bit chaotic. The ones in the hazmat suits were Saberlake security agents - you can see the patches on the suits as they come in the door. We know Saberlake has dealings with the void - they could be protecting themselves from possible contact with the voidway material that could possibly come through. We don't know anything about the man in the suit, beyond what we see in the cutscene.

Alora: Has also seen the opportunity to access the void, and wants a piece of the pie for herself. It seems that Ford has maybe used her. As for those two doors, I think it's meant to symbolise how the void is neither one, nor the other.

Didn't understand: go and re-read the walls in Breakroom again - they may make more sense now.

I think the Ford "Early Exit" guys are his previous attempts without the Gammon USB drive to upload the virus.

I'm guessing they're "test runs". However instead of wiping them from the system they became extra data garbage in the system and took on a life of their own. Which could explain why they're seen in the Garbage Collection area. Kind of like when you uninstall a program and it leaves behind crap in your registry.

I don't think Melon Belly is a product of the Void. I think it is part of the virus Ford uploaded. And the Nullbodies got addicted to it turning them in to the "Melon Bellies" and getting corrupted, just like corrupted files on your computer.

This appears to be the first time he's tried this - in this reality at least. ͡° ͜ʖ ͡ –

Melon Belly has been confirmed:
I mean they WERENT illegal but then [REDACTED] showed them how to ferment them in voidlight and well... you know how it goes

d e e p l o r e s p o i l e r : Someone/somepeople from the void taught the nullbodies to ferment the melons

They really need to come here to answer the questions. This is where the game is bought, so this is where questions should be answered.

Do they though?
There's quite a community built up on both the SL0 and fan discord servers. Besides, they are active here.

If Discord did not exist, the game could be bought and questions from the game could still be answered here. If Steam did not exist, the game cannot be sold through Discord. Without a place to buy the game, questions about it cannot be asked so there would be no point in having a server dedicated to it.

Discord may please some as a more ephemeral way of talking about the game, but the questions that players have about it are more permanent and universal. The questions I have asked are being asked by lots of players. If answered here, they are easily answered one time instead of dozens in the chat room setting of Discord. With the ability to link to the original post, even duplicate threads can be pointed to the answer by anyone. The people copying answers from the Discord are not copying the full and exact answers that were given so they are less reliable and always suspect of being assumption and hearsay.

For these reasons SL0 staff, need to come here to answer these questions.

It's almost like you think the devs are blurting out all the secrets over there - they're not. Just the occasional tidbit.
There are four more games planned, all building on and filling in gaps in the lore - they've got to keep their secrets. - to pre-empt the obvious question; in no particular order, Project 4, Curvelight, DeadFM and Hall of the Machine King.

Most of what we know has come from the community searching for hints and figuring things out, and actively chatting about it is useful.

You can link to posts on Discord just fine too - https://discordapp.com/channels/114518569059876868/653778496002326570/655663727642673152 is one of the two quotes I posted previously.

And if you hadn't noticed, I have made a rather large reply post here already.

I'm curious as to how often you think developers trawl their forums answering lore questions in general, even for games that the story isn't intentionally shrouded. They are here, but they are focusing on players with issues, which is a good thing.
