What I would love to see happen is they scrap the whole food system, go back to just 1 fish type and seaweed. Then a chop house and fish cleaner that cleans the one type of fish, then research grill that then grills the one type of cleaned fish. So you can uncomplicate this mess and make it so people can actually automate some of the food stuff.
If they want to add complexity to the game for replayability and difficulty scaling, then make food/water a bit easier and start developing towards happiness of drifters, entertainment buildings, a pub, chapel, a bathhouse or maybe at least a toilet, make them have needs outside of food and water, and then if they are unhappy they can abandon your ship.
Right now the game really doesn't have any of that so they only thing they can go with to make the game have any difficulty is resource grinding and late game it basically turns into 95% food grind.
