I seriously recommend going for solar panels as soon as possible and forgetting generators. Solar is so much easier.
I think the max inventory is simply how much firewood it can stockpile in it's own internal inventory. Max = 10 firewood. It goes through wood so fast that it's honestly a false economy to use since it's faster to have a dude jump on a bike than it is to fetch the wood, dry the wood, cut the wood and transport the wood through all these stages.
You can turn the manual generators on Off if you don’t want them to be used.
It's very strange that it's not working. Shouldn’t be the case. Either a bug or it could be wrongly connected?
There is an EElectricty overlay to double check if your power is connected correctly?
So we are aware of these issues, just bear with us a little longer. The payoff will be worth it ;)
I reported this bug already, but you haven't fixed it. The fix would be to not have the generator decrement the stockpiles on burning fuel, as it's already done so when it received it. It just results in inaccurate stockpile counts causing improper behavior.
I'm sure the other generator has a similar problem.
