Looking at your screen shot, I think the problem is that you did not set the dryer to unbottled fish. It needs to be set for either bottled or unbottled. By unbottling your fish, you have removed the bottled fish your dryer is waiting for. Set your dryer to drying unbottled fish, or stop unbottling fish, and you should be fine.
If that is not the problem, I think you need to temporarily make cooking the only 3 tier setting in the crew control. If there is too much work, and none of the crew are set for a task at a high enough setting, they will mindlessly do other things until it is too late.
I hope you guys move quickly to improve the food mess. I do like the game (much more before you updated to poison food and complicated the heck out of producing food). So I really want to see the game succeed and you guys profitable to keep developing.
I'm getting a little nervous though. These forums are dead, sometimes going 5-7 days without a single post. Which means new players aren't buying the game and coming to the forums to discuss/ask questions. Been around steam for years and years and play city/colony builders all the time. Once the forums/discussion dies the game is usually not far behind in my experience.
There is often a bit of a flurry of activity when an update is released but yeah, generally quiet is not a good sign.
lots and lots of buildings needed to make 1 food portion, where is the fishing net I know .. at this time all the time 1 person have to sit on this damn fishing chair??
please .. turn back time and give us the old systems back ..all you have done DEVs was a waste of time for me
The fishing chair is the easy starting way of fishing, but it can only be used to collect fish in the swimming distance circle around the ship. These fish schools do not need to be selected. The fishing boat can be used to collect fish only from selected fish schools within the outer boat range circle from the ship.
Each fish school contains 15 fish that are collected one at a time until all are collected.
There are 3 types of fish, from most common to rarest; Bottle Fish, Oil Gobbler, and Bloated Flounder. Each of these is treated differently to be made into food.
Bottle Fish can be directly dried on fish sticks. or can be unbottled first using an Unbottler, then dried on fish sticks. Dried Unbottled fish have less contamination the the dried Bottled fish, but the Unbottler needs to be researched and it's electrically expensive to run, so I never use an Unbottler. I always start with dried bottled fish, supplemented additionally with seaweed salad later. As warning, the drier has to be set to dry either bottled or unbottled fish. If you unbottle your fish, but the drier is set to bottled, you won't make any food.
Unbottled fish can also be processed into Unbottled fillets in a Fish Washer, and then combined with a Seaweed Sheet in a Food Truck to make Unbottled Rolls. I never do this because this is the only Food Truck made end game food that still has some contamination.
Oil Gobblers and Bloated Flounders need to be processed in Fish Washers first, then can be made into contamination free end game food in a Food Truck.
My normal food pathway, other than collected canned food is:
1. First build a Fishing chair and a Fish Sticks. Park the ship near fish schools when convenient or needed and collect fish. Set the production of dried Bottled fish to 2 days worth of food. Replace the Fishing Chair with a Fishing Boat when convenient to do so.
2. After collecting more Seaweed than I need to make rope, I research and build a Chop Shop and set it to make 1 days worth of Seaweed Salad. Make sure you collect enough fish and seaweed as you travel until you can make the end game food in Food Trucks. I never use the Unbottler or the Fish Kabob.
3, After researching the Fish Washer and Food Truck, I build 2 of each. Each Washer is set to infinitely process one of Oil Gobblers or Bloated Flounders. The Chop Shop is now set to make 2 days worth of Seaweed Sheets. One Food truck is set to make 2 days of Gobbler Rolls, and the other is set to making 2 days worth of Quarter Flounders. I only use Bottled Fish after this point to make Bird Chow, in a third Fish Washer, if I have a Seagull to feed.
You should have collected plenty of Gobblers and some Flounders by this point and you will start collecting massive amounts of useless Bottled Fish. The sickness from contaminated food is annoying, but if you make sure you always have at least 2 days worth of food and water, you just need to wait it out until they have recovered. Once only Gobbler Rolls and Quarter Flounders are being eaten nobody will get sick again.
I don't try to have a huge population when I play. What I do works if you keep to the 3 starting people for a while, then slowly add a few more. I imagine that you would have to use Unbottled fish and collect a lot more Seaweed than I normally do to sustain a large population. I think adding more people too early would make the game much more difficult.
