Possible Fixes to run the Sam and Max series

Generic Crash on startup
*By right clicking the game and DISABLING the steam overlay you should be able to play (the game was ported to steam and they never fixed the overlay issues). This ALSO works if you experience crashes when trying to change the resolution from fullscreen to windowed or adjusting sounds; tabbing out etc etc
*Run the game as administrator in Windows VISTA compatibility mode
*Edit the Prefs.prop with an app like notepad++ and change "window0"to "window1"

Resolution/audio Crashes
*Disable the Steam overlay (Right click the game in your steam library and untick the box in the General tab

I have the same problem. Tried to edit prefs.prop with notepad++ but the word "window" doesn't appear anywhere in the file. Am I missing something?

If Windowed0 doesn't appear in prefs.prop, try the following, it worked for me.

1. Right click the game in your library, go into properties and set launch options, add "-windowed" without quotation marks and try to start the game. At this point nothing happened for me, it won't start at all, but if you go into prefs.prop now you will find windowed0.
2. Change windowed0 to windowed1. The game still won't launch after this, but:
3. Remove "-windowed" from the launch options.
4. Start the game, it should work.

The real issue here seems to be that the game won't launch in full screen, but it wants to start in fullscreen and won't edit the prefs.prop to add the option to edit until the game has launched. Episode 101 and 201 (the ones I have checked so far) already have windowed0 in the prefs.prop to start with and can be edited, but apparently not this one. Adding the launch option "-windowed" doesn't seem to want to launch the game, but adds lines into the file for some reason.

Steam overlay has no effect for me and the game works fine with it in windowed mode, turning it off changes nothing about full screen mode though.

Thank You Geniuses!

On Win 10, none of the above suggested fixes worked. Can someone upload "prefs.prop" file that works on Win 10?

Im on windows 10 and it worked. Are you sure you aren't using Notepad? You need to use WinHex or Notepad++ for it to work.

My bad, tried Razekh's solution again, and this time it worked! Thanks everyone :D

Any other suggestions? I've follwed the instructions complete (yes, quite certain I am in Notepad++) but I am unable to get "Windowed" to show in the prefs file. I was able to get it to work in the first episode, but that's it.

Well, an update... I take it back, I was able to get it to work. It looks like it was having an issue when I put "-Windowed" in the startup options instead of "-windowed". Furthermore, it seems once you've messed it up you can't just delete the prefs file and try again... I had to actually completely delete the game and their install folders and reinstall from scratch to go through these steps to get it to work.

Its an annoyingly buggy game.
