Minor spoilers, you don't NEED to play the original VN, however some variables in scenes changed because in the original, there are times you could pick up the phone or ignore it, reply or ignore text messages, some of those are inconsequential (like ignoring the phone while talking to Kurisu.) In Elite, those alternate variations don't exist (one scene in 0.409431 is completely missing (see anime episode 17), and one scene was different in the anime. Both of these take place in about 6 minutes of the anime, but in the VN there was an entirely different sequence that happened book-ending both parts of that scene, they more or less were cut in the anime and, hence Elite.) Also in the original VN it's possible to repeat the first time leap until you actually act.
One confusing thing in Elite, the screen only shows the keyboard controls, even if you're playing with the controller. So write down the controls for the phone trigger.
I'd recommend playing the original VN first.
guess you missed the removal of shido and the railnet tournament
pro to s;ge version: the script is significantly longer than the original in the side bits, missing one main thing (shido).
