You'll want to be constantly moving until you can lay eyes on one, because they love sneaking up behind you when you're doing things like looking at your map or adjusting your inventory.
Once you have one in sight, they're easy. Move one space away on each axis, like so:
Where X is the shadowman, and Y represents your party. He won't move as long as you're facing north or east.
You can also sit in any of the spaces I've marked with an i to the same effect. Once you have yourself set up, it's pretty easy to bait the arm strike, then rush in and deliver a charged volley. Do that until you Part Break his arm, and then you can just do the Grimrock Two-Step where you wait for him to swing, then shuffle back and forward and hit him until he's dead.
Move to the side they are not face to attack.
Conclusion:
Sidestep (before breaking arm): ~5% chance of dying to AoE.
Sidestep (after breaking arm): ~20% chance of dying to impossible to avoid melee attack.
Only 100% safe strategy involves 2x2 free space where you can make enemy to turn around constantly and thus causing him to waste his "turn".
The problem is that when those enemies are introduced there are a lot of long hallways with very little room to deal with shadow men. I'm not 100% sure but it feels that they are also spawning behind me despite me clearing and scouting the whole area earlier and if that's the case the hallway of hell is impossible. I even left the door closed behind me and even then shadow man was suddenly behind me.
So.. when doing sidestepping you must never move away before shadow man begins his attack.
This is the same for most enemies actually, they have cooldowns like you do. For example if you charge up you cna dash up to those fat creatures and destroy the tongue before they can hit you. if you do it right.
