Steam deck FIX!!!!!
1. Turn on steam deck
2. Download just cause 2
3. switch over to desktop mode after jc2 install
4. open the discover store
5. download an app called protontricks
6. run protontricks
7. find jc2 and click on it(if you get a msg about updating winetricks just click ok)
8. a window will pop up with the option "select the default wine prefix" hit ok
9. next window select "install a windows DLL or component" hit okay
10. find "d3dcompiler_47" check the box to the left and hit okay

enjoy

ps: if you have a copy of Renegade Ops its the same process except you select "d3dcompiler_42" and "d3dcompiler_47". <3

worked like a charm. Also, i'm very new to this linux proton thing. What does that app do? Does it install windows stuff on linux?

In Linux, some games don't work natively with the Proton that Steam supplies (Proton is the main way Linux players play Windows-only games). Protontricks adds a few options that can often work around problems that native Proton doesn't fix.
The Deck runs Arch Linux, so when a game won't run natively on Proton (whether current or previous versions -- though I find previous versions will often fix most games), then you'll need Protontricks.
(Also related: reviews and lots of workaround for Steam games on Linux and the Deck can be found at protondb.com.)

Has not worked for me. Upon first installation I already had what I needed from Protontricks and it still didn't work.

Uninstalled and reinstalled, and now no matter what I do Protontricks only gives me an error message when selecting Just Cause 2

Tried every other suggested solution, from adding -dx11 to the launch commands to using various GE-Protons to copying a complete install folder of the game from my PC.

Nothing's worked. The furthest I can get is the game's copyright screen before it crashes.

This is a problem if you are on the beta branch of updates for the steam deck apparently. It should work if you go back to the stable version.

Something strange with the steam version, game didn't run with the tricks but after i copy a no cd patch for this game (remember it is a steam version) and try everything again, it runs.

Nope. I’m on the Stable branch. Just tried it again months later. Clean reinstalled the game, Protontricks still returns an error message. Game still won’t launch on Deck.

Um…never mind…now it seems to just work out of the box if I use Proton Experimental…
