Lag help

I can't have this game set at it's maximum resolution because it lags to the point its unplayable (plus loading times that literally last minutes). I set the resolution to it's lowest setting, 800x600, and while it still lags a little, its at least PLAYABLE, but obviously it makes the game look like trash. Also audio is a bit off sync
So is it my laptop that's the issue or is this game just broken? Anything I can download to make it run better?? there's also a level where you have to switch from violet to dash and no matter how many times I pressed Y, it wouldn't switch. and I know my controller isn't broken so what gives?
Kind of a shame because I really wanted to play this game and I don't have any newer consoles so I might as well return it or something

LEGO games were never too taxing for hardware, even though I can't play LEGO Incredibles on my three years old laptop in 4K resolution, all the other settings are set to max and the resolutions is fullhd. Apart from other issues caused by the fact that all LEGO games are buggy, I havent had a single problem peformance wise. What are your specs?
