Market share never seems to increase? What am I doing wrong?

During the tutorial, my exec defeated a rival in town square and her market share increased by one. Since then, I've defeated two more rivals in the town square but none of my executives' market share has increased.

What am I missing?

Market share is always tied to a specific business (like food, shipping, etc.) So if you defeat a rival with 4 food market share, only the executive with the food business (which would be Max) receives that bonus. If you haven't merged with that executive yet, you'll still get any bonus you've earned to his/her market share when you do merge.

Each business on the district map has an icon showing the industry that this business operates in (eg entertainment, textiles, etc.). Each manager comes from a specific industry. When you click on the business in the district map it will show you a thumbnail of the manager who will benefit from taking over that industry and how much they will benefit by. Each manager's industry score varies independently based on how many businesses in their specific industry that you have taken over previously.
