The main difference between the games is the use of heroes and level unique specials. The first game each hero starts a level at level 1 and has to level up as you play the stage. In Frontiers and Origins you level up heroes on an overall package in the game regardless of individual stages, and their levels are permanent. There are a lot more stage unique items and specials in Origins than there is in Frontiers, and there are almost none in the original game. All are good tower defense games. All are very similar.
I decided to go for the original KR on android and Frontiers here on Steam.
So even though Origins is like the prequel to all of them, story-wise, I'd still recommend just playing them in release order as well, so KR > Frontiers > Origins.
