I do however think its a problem that there are so few levels. I was expecting new ones to become available when I beat the final mission, as there are large chunks of the map not utilised at all (whats with those gemstone mines in the north?). New missions should be the easiest thing to make - just give us a path, some tower slots, and throw some already established enemy types at us.
Basically, Im disappointed that for a £12 price tag I didnt get 12 hours of gameplay and there's barely more than 12 missions.
All in all, what we get right now is mostly just graphical changes with pretty disappointing map design for most levels. Still the same old mechanics, the same "surprises", making it all feel a bit worse than previous games. As nothing feels new or improved upon, it just feels like playing an expansion, at best. One that isn't as fun as the original.
Feels like the milking of the series has officially begun.
Expect a "multiplayer" version in the future. It'll be F2P obviously. Where you build your town between missions. With 3 day wait timers on upgrading a building. A building that unlocks archer upgrades from lvl 3 > specialization. Which must first be researched once you place the building. Research'll cost premium currency or some other hard to come by resource obtained super slowly through gameplay. Research will take forever to complete, with options to finish it instantly, for even more premium currency. Heroes must be bought for ~10-20 bucks each. You'll have cheaty boosts available in a mission, for premium currency ofcourse. Some missions are designed to be a paywall, requiring you to spend money or be stuck grinding for weeks. Meanwhile all the above will still apply - identical stats, heroes, enemy types, map design which is obviously getting worse, but nothing new or innovative beyond all the new freemium ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
Mark my words.
Adding levels would be fairly straight forward as long as they only include already seen enemies without anything new. Now, you'd still have to create the map, code menus, waypoints etc for the map itself and the overall game and most importantly you'd have to balance it. But overall, i think most people would appreaciate one more level rather than one more hero.
However, you have to understand that: heroes is where they get their money from. As mentioned the game is free (or sometimes close to) but the heroes are not.
The designer has to look at what he wants to create and find a balance in creating actual content or creating something that will make money.
In any case: i think they made a mistake in leaving the map as it is right now, having future content visible but not accessable. Even if that content will be free in the future, it gives an impression that there will be something after completing the campain and can only be met with disappointment once those expectations do not get met.
Edit: Adding new levels would be straight forward yes, but this series has made a point of frequently introducing new things. Be it new towers, new enemies, new bosses, paths opening up in a stage, a new gimmick, new ways the enemies can move etc etc. You will rarely find a level that is just a reskin of something that already exists. So it is unlickely that such a developer would spam content for the sake of having more levels.
They've done the exact opposite with all three of the games currently on Steam.
