This game is good overall, but ya it could always be better/improved in certain ways.
There are a few alright mods at nexusmods DOT com.. but nothing great.
I enjoyed the single player story, it's good and well done.
It's default difficulty is hard as HELL!
Multiplayer is fun with friends too!
Makes me wonder how they'll manage with properly finishing their new game "StarRupture".. Looks neat, but, ehhhh we'll see how that one turns out lol, and holds up over time.
I can sort of see your point about the shields and maces, though I think this game tries to lead you more into an 'avoid danger' mode, instead of a 'lets juggernaut' mode.
As to the pets, it adds gameplay elements to a settler playthrough. You don't have to use pets if you want to play a nomadic survival playthrough, but if you want to settle in a single place and build an extensive base, it's nice to be able to add some livestock.
Now whether you like these elements is obviously a matter of personal preference, I just think it's nice that they added a broad array of mechanics to give players the freedom to choose what to play. Whether you want to keep moving through the jungle and survive on what you find, or whether you want to settle in a nice spot and build a self sustaining farm in the middle of the jungle, or build a fortress to fend off those pesky zombie natives. It's all possible.
And once you've completed the building, it's nice to be able to add some finishing touches like furniture (which they added together with the decorations), curtains, some paintings or a human skull. Instead of just a single bed and fireplace.
