There are two stories, the original which could be considered a little short and the longer Spirits of the Amazonia which takes a long time to complete. I have many hours in this game with friends and family. The only issue I know of is that if you don't stick with it or start to get burn out on the expansion content and take a brake for a few weeks or a month its somewhat hard to get your barrings again and pick up where you left off. (This maybe just a personal problem though) Overall the co-op is both a challenge and can also result in some funny moments but often then not is rather serious. They are still adding additional content. The game features exploration, base building of which your not very limited on what you can do and can come up with some pretty neat bases, combat, survival needs its rather complex to learn all the recipes and remember what you need for a snake bite vs a bee sting and the like.
I would wager that any new player or players will enjoy it and should experience it the visuals and audios are pretty decent as well.
hope this help!
Also you can read my official review that I posted some time ago here although some things have changed I still think this is a rather in depth review.

STRAIGHT TO THE RANCH YOU GO. (I'm sorry, had to do that after looking at your username and pfp.)
Anyways, I would say that playing coop is a MUST in this game. The game's really not beginner friendly, and you WILL need two or three or four sets of eyes. The more the better. So yeah, since you have friends readily available, you should def all get the game. There are two stories, the main one and spirits of amazonia, the latter of which drags on for far too long and would be an absolute masochistic torturous thing to do in singleplayer. One of you will have to be the host, and you will only be able to play when they're online and hosting. Something quite important: if one of you needs to pause for a while, ALL of you have to pause. the game does NOT stop for you if you pause, unless everybody else does, too. so for example, if you're the only one who pauses, your nutrients will keep going down and you may faint/die.
