It could probably do w/ a more comprehensive tutorial, but I suppose that's a topic for a different discussion.
(Full Disclosure: Over 4900 hours & counting. But I'm a retiree, so I got it like that.

Thanks for the spam, please read my answer above, the option USE does not appear, I'm not an idiot, this game is very counter intuitive. No green dot means no fire using the planks.
I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but in story mode, you have to look at the drill in your notebook before you can actually make one.
Is it a bug? I thought that the idea of looking at it first in the notebook was to see what materials you need to make one.
The notebook shows how many sticks you need, that is it, there's nothing about actually lighting it. The plank doesn't work as it does in the main game, there is no 'USE' which appears. I have now made a fire fine in the main game.
So it's me and my totally logical thinking which is at fault then, not the totally counter-intuitive game design, why doesn't it appear next to the fire in the book? the two always go hand in hand.
And none of this is explained in the tutorial. I find it incredibly lazy of the developers to not bother explaining very basic concepts of how to play the game.
As for the fire. If you completed the tutorial, you should know that you need the hand drill and some dry material to make a fire. That one's on you.
EDIT: And now it seems that jagaurs just materialize out of thin air to stop you from sprinting around the island. Very unimmersive, very boring, very lazy.

You put down the fire from your notebook using the left mouse button. Gather small sticks and sticks and add them to the fire ghost from your inventory using the E key (don't open the backpack). Search for "something dry" (the birds nest at the creek). Create a fire starting tool, use it and drag the birds nest from your backpack onto it. Once it glows, add it to the fire using the E key.
It wasn't that the developers were being lazy, they wanted it that way to make the game more realistic and hardcore. If you were desperate to know how to craft items before playing the game, you could have chosen many ways to find the answers, so maybe you are the lazy one?
You need a stick AND a plank or small stick. Then, when you've made it, you need to stand close enough to your fire pit to see some dots. Then, you right-click on the fire drill in your backpack and you'll see "use" but it's small and easy to miss if you're high, which i currently am.
The game also got a very comprehensive wiki going.
So this complaint doesn't make much sense at all.
You should try play a game in the 90's where everything looked like a monocromatic blurred pixel in a very terrible resolution, no internet, no cellphones, barely any friends that played the game that your uncle got you for Christmas and the game was about playing Golf with some random sports star name that only made the game even more boring and overpriced.
Those were the days...
