Says it all really. I thought it would be better than this after all this time. Looks lovely but still glitchy, why can't I start a fire (after already finding all the sticks and building it) even in the tutorial? No help given or found. Disappointing.

You are right, the people who fail at this task should better not play the game.

That's actually a pretty high %. The game has a steep initial learning curve, which I'm sure scares some folks off.

It could probably do w/ a more comprehensive tutorial, but I suppose that's a topic for a different discussion.

(Full Disclosure: Over 4900 hours & counting. But I'm a retiree, so I got it like that. :lunar2020hearteyesrabbit:)

No you're wrong, I play a lot of survival games and I'm a life-long engineer and problem solver, I'm actually ideally suited to this game and it was one I've been wanting to try. I started with two 'planks' in the fire section, nothing works with them, small sticks, sticks, dry leaves, rope, I have tried everything. The 'green dots' don't appear and it never says 'use' just craft or destroy. It's as glitched as F and completely counter intuitive, also there's no help, even online, it shows you how to 'use' (which would be easy) but I never get that option. In real life I would have started a fire by now..

I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but in story mode, you have to look at the drill in your notebook before you can actually make one.
It's actually a bug with the tutorial, as in the survival game it works. But not in the tutorial, where you really need it.

Is it a bug? I thought that the idea of looking at it first in the notebook was to see what materials you need to make one.

The notebook shows how many sticks you need, that is it, there's nothing about actually lighting it. The plank doesn't work as it does in the main game, there is no 'USE' which appears. I have now made a fire fine in the main game.

So it's me and my totally logical thinking which is at fault then, not the totally counter-intuitive game design, why doesn't it appear next to the fire in the book? the two always go hand in hand.

I can see why. Just bought the game. Noticed that the tutorial also plays in the solo game, and that there is a bug that locks items if you complete it. Then I wandered around forever dying trying to figure out how to get a basic tool. Turns out you can expand>harvest rocks and bones, prying them apart with your fingers. Also, only large rocks exist. no small rocks, for some reason. Now I'm trying to figure out how to make an axe and from looking this up online it seems that you just have to guess at every recipe until you get it right, because waiting to level up crafting is useless, because animals will spawn and kill you if you don't have tools. The solution to every problem is "die over and over until you have figured out all the crafting recipes, and THEN you get to actually play the game".

And none of this is explained in the tutorial. I find it incredibly lazy of the developers to not bother explaining very basic concepts of how to play the game.

As for the fire. If you completed the tutorial, you should know that you need the hand drill and some dry material to make a fire. That one's on you.

EDIT: And now it seems that jagaurs just materialize out of thin air to stop you from sprinting around the island. Very unimmersive, very boring, very lazy.

I was curious so I started the tutorial again to see if it works. It does, here's the evidence:

You put down the fire from your notebook using the left mouse button. Gather small sticks and sticks and add them to the fire ghost from your inventory using the E key (don't open the backpack). Search for "something dry" (the birds nest at the creek). Create a fire starting tool, use it and drag the birds nest from your backpack onto it. Once it glows, add it to the fire using the E key.

It wasn't that the developers were being lazy, they wanted it that way to make the game more realistic and hardcore. If you were desperate to know how to craft items before playing the game, you could have chosen many ways to find the answers, so maybe you are the lazy one?

I just played this game for the first time today. Figured out how to make a fire in the tutorial. It can be confusing because the instructions aren't the clearest.

You need a stick AND a plank or small stick. Then, when you've made it, you need to stand close enough to your fire pit to see some dots. Then, you right-click on the fire drill in your backpack and you'll see "use" but it's small and easy to miss if you're high, which i currently am.

Despite Jake's predicament, all players got internet access and probably a higher percentage than that knows what Google is and how to use it.

The game also got a very comprehensive wiki going.
So this complaint doesn't make much sense at all.

You should try play a game in the 90's where everything looked like a monocromatic blurred pixel in a very terrible resolution, no internet, no cellphones, barely any friends that played the game that your uncle got you for Christmas and the game was about playing Golf with some random sports star name that only made the game even more boring and overpriced.

Those were the days...
