Communication in multiplayer

Is there an in-game way to communicate in multiplayer?
Yesterday I started a survival run and for a change I decided to make it an open multiplayer. After a while someone joined in. We never met, I don't know where he was in the map. At some point he crafted a two handed axe because it popped out in my notebook. Then he died and my sanity went down the drains, even if I still didn't even know where he was. He wasn't in my area either, because the only locations that popped up in the map when I found one were those I had found. After a while I decided it was time to sleep and I closed the game, meaning it ended for him too. I felt quite bad but there was no way to communicate.
Is there a way? Chat? Phones?

There is an inbuilt text press on enter brings up the text .
I prefer the Steam voice chat. Use a mic and send a voice chat request, open chat to your friend bottom right of the chat box is a Mic picture click on that.

Thank you, the text chat is enough to ask some random stranger's location or warn that I'm about to close the game. I never tried before because I usaully play with my son in the adjacent room, we use discord but we actually could do without...
