Campfire or small fire under smoker? Does it actually cook food faster??
If you’re building a fire under a smoker, does it matter if you use the campfire or the small fire? I don’t need the extra cooking slots and I know the campfire burns a little longer, but does it actually burn hotter so the food gets smoked faster?? What about food cooked directly on it, will it get cooked faster? If the only benefits to the campfire are the extra cooking slots and burning longer, it’s def not useful under a smoker.

Personally I think its designed to use the small fire under the bamboo smoker. We can replenish the small fire with charcoal sticks dried materials.
To smoke food its needs to be on the grill not on the fire cooking spots. The smoker has its own timer inbuilt and the cooking spots have their own timers for cooking. I actualy prefer to use the dryer have 2 built and then fill them once food is dried just eat off the drier.
Soups and stews in bowls stacked on the ground never expire.
Tin foods and snacks are best for on the run mushrooms east to find.

I prefer the dryer too but in the rainy season, the smoker is the best. I also leave my meat on the dryer and as long as you don’t remove it, it never expires. I haven’t tested the smoker to see if meat expires if left on it or not yet but I might in a few mins.

I have left bone soup in a bowl on a campfire cooking slot for a very long time (at least 2 in game weeks of using and putting out the fire) and it didn’t expire or burn either. It also won’t expire if it’s in a clay bottle. I still have one bottle of bone juice from 400 days ago that I just refill as needed.

I ended up building two smokers with a small fire and a campfire under each and apparently you are correct, the smoker has its own timer because they are cooking at the same time.

Do you happen to know if Food cooked directly on a campfire in the actual cooking slots gets done faster than with a small fire? If not, and the only benefit is the extra cooking slots, it’s not really worth having a campfire at all. I like that it burns a little longer but that’s not worth the trouble of finding all the materials.

Sounds like you also have the good methods.
AFAIK there is no difference in cooking times just more cooking spots between the small fire and the campfire. when one considers the campfire is just a small fire inside a circle of stones and the stones add more cooking spots :)

Doesn't the campfire also last longer before needing more fuel? Not that it's much of an issue if you're like me and put out the fires when not actively using.

I use small campfires when I'm just getting started or camping in the bush, but I always "upgrade" to large campfires, as soon as it's convenient, at my bases. I cook a lot of soups, & I get tired of the loose pots getting knocked around. ^^

The superior way of eating is by pouring from the bottle into a Coconut Shell so that you can have 10 servings per full bottle.

That's quite a lot of nutrients, pretty much removes the need to carry meats since the soup doesn't expire.

I tried putting soup directly from the big pot into the coconut but it wouldn’t let me. I’ve never tried pouring it from a bottle into a coconut but I know you can do that with water. I just figured the coconut wouldn’t let you put hot soup in it. 🤷‍♀️ (OK after I wrote this, I think you are meaning to pour into a half shell, which I have done. I usually just drink directly from the bottle but your way is def better!)

I keep three bottles of bone soup, tobacco brew, and the fever one at my base and I’m going on day 520 without it expiring. Honestly, the coconut shells are not much different in weight, seem like they take up more space, and only hold 40 so I prefer to use the bottles anyway.

I havent noticed any difference in the cooking times, my preferred is the mud wall fireplace it cooks stuff pretty fast. I'll keep an eye on my cooking timers :)

Cooking times are affected by how much cooking xp you have. From the wiki..."The cooking skill reduces the amount of time required to cook food, and will also increase the time it takes for food to burn.

The players cooking skill can be increased simply by cooking food. As with all skills, the number of items required to cook to unlock each skill level will increase with each level."
