Effects of Plants/Fruit etc.

Is consumption the only way to discover the effects of a plant, fruit or any other food? I'd like to update my journal/notes without dying.

Yes any additions to our survival notepad are once we try it.
But not everything has to be eaten :)
Once you become sick and start vomiting etc then you learn the anitdotes and cures and remedies for each poison which is added to the survival notepad.
Its rare to get killed by eating poisonous plants.
Only predators such as spiders and rattle snakes may kill you. But there is a remedy for them the white pills plantation lilly.

Infections can also kill you if left untreated.
The best action is to read some of the wiki information prior then be informed.

You can also get some information in the story mode from notes, posters on the walls and ayahuasca visions, if you feel that using the wiki is cheating

Wiki is not cheating. Thats like asking for help here in the discussions and saaying it is cheating lol

I wasn't asking for the specific effects. I was asking how to obtain them in game.

To add up to your notes, it's not JUST consumption. You can learn about the effects of fruit from the notes from Story mode, particularly Tobacco and Molineria. As for the rest, yes, you need to eat, craft in bandage, plant etc. them to add more info to the notebook. It's worth noting that there's no plant that can cause excessive harm as keeping a few of the violet leaves and water lilies can easily mitigate the food poisoning they might cause. Also, walking it off or sleeping when there's too many stacks of FP works fine too.
