Animal husbandry feedback and bugs (advice appreciated)
Playing with latest updates, single player, SOA, green hell difficulty.

Bug 1:
For story reasons I need a baby tapir skin, but I'm having trouble finding baby tapirs. So I created an animal pen and put 2 tapirs in (male and female). They produced a baby tapir, which I killed and harvested, but it didn't give me anything - no skin or meat, only the arrow that I had used to kill it. I killed it in the pen the day it was born after I woke up.

Bug 2:
I left my base for 2 game days, and when I came back, the water trough was empty, even though it was constantly raining during that time. It's either not refilling when I'm not in the vicinity, or resetting itself to 0 when I come back to base.

Bug 3:
When I pet my tapirs, the camera shakes left and right rapidly until the animation is complete.

Feedback:
Resource consumption for the troughs is far too high, for both food and water. Feeding my 2 tapirs long enough to get their loyalty up and then make a baby took so much food that the area around my base doesn't have anymore green - it's now Brown Hell lol. Considering that animal spawns are plentiful, it's not worth the effort to partake in this mechanic. Effectively, you need someone constantly there to prevent the animals from starving, and that is not practical or useful in this game. I saw in another thread that this is considered by the devs to be "Balanced", but I would strongly suggest that they try it themselves by creating an animal pen with 2 tapirs, and try to keep them alive while fulfilling all the SOA quests.
(I can imagine some hardcore player taking this as a challenge, and it might be just about possible, but it's not worth the effort for on demand sanity and a new tapir every 4 days. I'd rather just kill the tapirs that constantly spawn at my base, and sit by the fire to increase sanity.)

Help needed:
I still need a baby tapir skin - so I'd appreciate either a workaround for bug 1, or instructions on where to find baby tapirs that drop skins in SOA.

Finally, thank you for this game. I bought it quite early on, and while I liked a lot of the mechanics, it felt like a lot was missing, so I only played it a bit. Coming back to it 2-3 years later, I'm very impressed by the continued progress you have made. One of my best early access purchases.

Tapirs you breed only give you a skin if they reach a certain point in their development/age.
There are like three stages, the first only gives you a bone. You have to let it grow a bit. Last stage and chance to get a skin is when the fur/skin turns from yellow into white, if you miss that stage it turns into an adult and you have to repeat that process.
I already breed over 10 baby tapirs, for science of course.
Those you can hunt down during night with rain on specific locations seem to give you the hide no matter what age they are.
I highly recommend hunting them down. It's the safest way to get the hide and you don't have to nurse them for two ingame weeks.

Edit: The legend quest works perfectly fine with a skin from a breed tapir. I finished mine during the dry season.

Try capturing one in the wild as intended.
I think using the Animal Husbandry upgrade in the SOA2 is not supported for the SOA2 quests.
Place a snare trap and snare one at night.
I can give you the co ordinates where I found him. I placed a snare trap to the right behind my small base.
I found him on the river bed dried out up from the plane.

The baby tapirs you need only come out at night and spawn around the small water holes that are dry unless it is raining which is what your legend should have told you. there is one very close to the main tribe camp for that story a little past the banana trees. But you can find them at any of these small watering holes.

You are right about the amount of work it takes to raise these animals and that is is a lot easier to just go out hunting. I don't remember off hand if the water troughs fill up with rain or not but it seems like they intentionally don't. If they did it wouldn't take as much work to gain the animals trust so I believe they did that intentionally. I will have to check though because now I'm wondering.

Hi!
Baby tapirs you breed drop skin only for a certain amount of time. If you're still unlucky, you can send us your save file and we will fix this for you: https://steamcommunity.com/app/815370/discussions/1/1776010325116391886/
The water through should fill with rainwater, but we're gonna check it. Are you sure it's not under any raincutter/roof?
The camera shake is admittedly an issue and we're doing what we can to fix it.
I've forwarded your feedback about the balance, but for now, we're not planning any changes.

Thank you for all responses and advice - really nice to see community engagement and a dev response :)

I've tried 3 more times to get a tapir skin using this method, and it never works - the only part of the animal I get back is 1 bone. I also tried 2 different methods of killing (bow and spear), and harvesting it as soon as it dropped dead. I'm going to send you the save file now.

The water trough definitely fills up when I'm standing there with rain - however on more testing I think I may have been underestimating the amount the animals drink at once, and it would only take a short break in the rain to potentially empty the trough. Once I get rid of the animals I'll keep the trough there, and let you know if there are further issues.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

for me, since i seem to be in the dry season and i can't hunt for them in the wild right now, i had to breed instead.

i plotted down three snare traps in different locations near base and only one of those traps were sometimes capturing tapirs, and only female! i could not for the life of me get a male even after capturing 10+ female tapirs on that same trap. so i ended up having to build more snares. it definitely seemed like different snare traps had a fixed animal/gender they could end up catching (my guess is based on zones they're built on). i eventually caught a male in one of the newer snares i made.

i stayed at base and ended up raising 2 bred tapir cubs and they had white stripes right when they were born. i tried to kill them early in the growth period and only got a bone like others have mentioned. i wasn't sure where the cutoff was for when they would became adults, so i would save, try killing them every so often, and if i only got a bone, i would quit without saving and reload the save. eventually one was at around 80% trust, so i tried killing and harvesting that one and finally got the skin! i'm not sure if they can be killed earlier than that but i got skins from both tapir cubs at 80% trust so i hope this helps anyone else.
