Fishing Baits.
Might as well start a new topic with my research about fishing.
Bait-
Maggots: Discus, Angelfish.
Larva: Piranha, Peacock Bass
Discus/Angelfish: Piranha, Arowana
Orange Cup Mushroom: Arowana, Peacock Bass.

This is for the fishing rod, and only works if the fish in question is visible in the water in the location the lure is cast.
So far have only found Piranha at the Fishing Dock river, Bass at the Oasis (near drug lab) and Arowana in the new Lagoon zone. Not sure about Haven.
Discus and/or Angelfish can be found in weedy (grass/seaweed stuff) locations in those areas, in weedy locations in the streams - often near the waterfalls - and near mangrove roots. They can be spearfished.

The fishing pole trap is different though. As far as I can tell, its actually random what you get. I've only caught Piranha and Bass with it, but the bait didn't matter nor did the location.
You can catch Bass with discus, or Piranha with mushrooms. Just bait and walk away (or sleep for an hour or two).

If anyone has caught Arowana with the pole trap, comment please. Location, bait and how often.

Nice little guide. Didn't even knew that you could use the orange mushrooms

problem is finding this stuff around where my camp is. im by the waterfall down south. i can get an angelfish occasionally, but not very often. traps down here are not doing well at all.

Hmm, I have noticed that the 'large stick fish traps' tend to catch angelfish and discus often. Try using maggots as bait. Stick traps don't need bait, but they seem to catch faster with it.

Larva can be gotten by collecting the orange fruit any time you see it. Its spoil timer is quite short.
Or check the big tree stumps at night, can find 3-4 there sometimes.

Maggots are a bit of a pain sometimes. I tend to build camps all over the map with drying racks and forget to bring dried meat when I leave. So it spoils on the racks. Or collect the meat from the random dead birds/mice/toads and let it spoil. If you don't harvest I think the corpse will stay through reloads even on the ground, but after a point the meat will still spoil, so gutting it will result in spoiled meat.

Leaving fruits, vegetables and meats on the ground, they will often disappear when they spoil. I'm not perfectly sure if this would work but placing them on stone ring might keep them there even after they spoil. Or use a smoker and just not smoke the meat.
For the non-cookable fruits, has to be backpack. Besides bananas and ceriman (green corn thing) they spoil within a day. Ceriman doesn't spoil.

For the mushrooms, particular logs are the 'mushroom logs'. Whether they have mushrooms and what kind is decided when the save is loaded. And possibly when you sleep or leave the area and return. This is actually how I got them for testing (repeatedly quit and reloaded the save till the right mushrooms spawned).

I haven't been to the Haven area, will have to check that place out.

lol i actually killed a big fish using my bow and arrow. hmm i know theres a stump close by ill check it out. last two times i looked i saw nothig there tho. ill keep looking. only mushrooms i seen are the lil glowing ones on the logs. (in this area) the only non fish things ive gotten so far is a couple dead birdfs and an armadillo. havent seen any armadillos since tho. kinda a sparse area for bigfger critters.

Yeah, killing Arowana with bows is probably the fastest and easiest way to do it.
The glowing mushrooms are the most common, but it means that log is a 'mushroom log'. Larva on stumps is really random, have to check at night (after moonrise I think, when the blue light starts).

atm i suck with my bow and such. i avoid the tribal guys like the plauge and hide.
taking them on isnt an option yet for me.
and why they can run around as fast a lighting bolt im not sure... lol
their speed seems pretty broken.
