Question about Items on Death
I saw a review posted that stated something along the lines of "death with cause you to lose unique items". Is this true (or still true) or part of the difficulty selection? Haven't started yet but wanted to know how true that was and how well to manage that ahead of time. I plan to go guide-less, so I'm probably going to die a fair bit.

Partially true, when we die we lose our backpack it is dropped where we die, so we have to go back and get it.
In addition, any death that occurs during co-op also affects others. After a player dies, the rest receive negative point to mental health.
it can be helarious when we all start getting red head and hear the insanity taunts, so if one of the co op people keeps dieing it starts to get really funny.
I cant find the exact episode as we did a whole series when co op came out, I died l few times its fun co op. Here's one video episode where Unkempt shows what insanity is like when we die. Around 29 minutes. first deaths, At 1 hour 14 we get hit by a ton of tribesmen game glitched but we survived it was exciting to say teh least.

Difficulty doesn't really matter. Now, if you die in single player mode, you're death. No coming back from that, except loading your previous made save. If you want to make some progress, you might wanna host an "invite only" multiplayer game. You can still save your game and in addition, if you die you can spawn at your last resting place (sleeping* not graveyard).

To clarify, if you die, you don't drop your backpack.....you drop your inventory and keep the backpack. Every single item is out in the open and waiting for someone to pick it up.
Imagine picking up over 100 items, oh joy. On the ground, every item starts to decay over time. If it takes to long for you to reach them in time they're gone. Food is usually spoiled and your weapons and firemaking tools are almost broken. Collected stuff for crafting tends to disappear to a few items left.

If you think you die in a multiplayer game (poison, serious bleeding from a cat fight etc), run for the next palm leaf bed and sleep there. That's now the place where you die and respawn and the damage over time for the specific items should be minimal. You still have to pick them up, tho.

Really unique quest items can't be lost, they are attached to your backpack.
Everything you can actively use, drop, alter, eat and drink is dropped. Except your empty backpack. Welcome to Hell. I mean Green Hell. Have fun and Good Luck.
