I want to know what to look for before wanting to craft it. Not that hard to understand tbh.
CRAFTING:
The best hint that I can give you about crafting is to put an item to craft. You'll see some dots on your screen, showing that you can use more items to craft something using the item that you selected.
For example... Let's say you put item A to craft and you see 5 dots. This means you can craft something using item A + 4 other items, but that doesn't mean you can ONLY craft that, if you have something that uses item A + 1 item, once you put the second item, it will tell you can craft that thing, OR keep adding more items to craft something more.
To be more precise... Let's say you right-click the stick and ask to craft. You'll see that stick alone can't craft (and there are items that you can craft using ONLY the item), but you'll see something like 5 or 7 dots (I'm not sure), this means you can craft stuff using stick up to more 6 items...
Together with the stick you put a rope, you'll see now that the game tells you you can craft a weak torch, BUT YET you'll see there are more dots to fill, this means stick + rope = weak torch, but stick + rope + MORE THINGS = other craftings.
So... The best thing you can do is to experiment with things. Every time you find something new, you can try to craft something using it... You can also HARVEST some items to gain other items, and you can also experiment to craft more stuff.
Have in mind that in some recipes you use more than one of the same material. If you ask to craft something using a feather, you'll see a lot of dots, if you place a small stick, you'll see it'll ask for another item... It's another feather... SO... Get experimenting.
There are more than 100 eatable things in the game, and you know nothing about them. Some items you'll learn the game (if you are playing Story mode), but every time you eat something you learn what that food gives to you.
To learn you need to eat... Some items you can be logical, like eating rot food probably won't be good for you, eating animal droppings probably won't be good for you, but the thing that you'll most eat are mushrooms, and there are a lot of them.
Literally, get experimenting, eat one thing of everything to learn what they do (in case you can't use logic to know if it's good or bad), and be ready to feel a lot of bad consequences, because there are a bunch of them.
Anyways... This is how you learn about food, you eat and learn what they do, if they do something bad, you'll have to learn how to deal with it. You can read the solution for bad effects in your notebook, by the way.
- Understand before starting, your character will likely die many times.
- Walk, DON'T RUN.
- Listen to your environment for clues to danger.
- Look at all the plants and trees you come across to see if they provide a prompt for use.
- Pay attention to your Sanity meter, as well as your Nutrition needs displayed on the watch.
- In Tribal, or other POI areas, look at all the items to get new recipes.
- Open the crafting interface and put items on it to see if a recipe is valid. There are some recipes you can figure out from the beginning, and some that you cannot figure out until you find the item in the world. Try lots of different combos.
- All recipes you know will be listed in the notebook.
If you need anymore help with the game feel free to add me as a friend and DM with questions i've got almost 100 hours into green hell. More than happy to help a new player :)

Hey mate, good luck. As has already been mentioned - walk, don't run. Sound cues are very important in this game. Snakes and spiders are often hidden in the undergrowth, and you might not see them, but you will definitely hear them as you approach. They are dispatched easily with a spear, as long as you don't run. Snake bites are probably the most common cause of strife.
