Newbie questions
Hi! :)

I played the tutorial and then started a game on "Story" mode (since I want to experience the story, and the description of the other modes suggests that they don't feature the story, but focus exclusively on survival). I died pretty quickly in my first game, but the second one is going better. I found a small "cave" that provides shelter for my fire, I have fairly reliable food sources (mushrooms, caimans from stone traps, bananas, fish if I can catch them with the spear) and I use two coconut bowls to collect fresh water. It looks like I can sustain myself, so I can now build more structures and explore further.

However, some core mechanics are still unclear to me.

Specifically, how do I unlock more things to build/craft in my notebook? If I remember correctly, then the stone axe "recipe" was given to me pretty randomly in my first game. However, this did not happen in my second game. I eventually tried to craft it without "knowing" the recipe, which worked. So am I supposed to just try different components on the crafting table until I find a combination that works, while using the empty/filled circles in the crafting interface as a guide? Or is there another way?

Second, from a game that advertises itself as using realistic survival techniques, I would have expected to do things like e.g. pee on my fire to douse it, or use my poop as fertilizer. However, my digestive system does not seem to excrete anything. Am I missing something? If there is no such feature, have the devs ever said anything about it? It looks like a pretty obvious omission, so the question must have come up before.

Third, time seems to run very fast (much faster than I would expect from a realistic survival simulator). Is there a way to slow it down?

Fourth (this is more a comment than a question), I found the save system a bit counter-intuitive. I read in the notebook that shelters allow me to save, so I built one and slept in it, expecting this to save the game - which it obviously didn't. I did not even notice the "save" button floating above the shelter, because when I use it, I'm naturally looking down. And the game taught me all the time before that if an object has several alternative uses, I can access these by right-clicking and expanding the menu. In hindsight it's of course clear how it works, but the incosistent interface had me confused for a bit.

Is there anything else I might be missing? I'm aware of the wiki, but I usually have more fun trying to figure things out myself. That's difficult though when core mechanics aren't explained in the game (e.g. the tutorial tells me how to craft a drill, but it does not tell me how to research better items or structures).

Hi) I hope you will enjoy playing the game!
1 - you will discover new recipes for buildings/structures when you walk across the map, especially in camps/bases. For craft, you need to randomly combine things in your "building table", but honestly I prefer just to read wiki. One non-intuitive thing is that there are a lot of axes, bandages, armor, but the game and wiki do not clearly show what is the difference between them (in fact there is almost no difference)
2 - player do not do this things, You can stop fire by putting water from coconut bowl on top of fire. Also you can use animal's poop as fertilizer (you hear insects noise near poop)
3 - I think there is no way to slow down time, I also think the game is too fast
4 - on a typical shelter, if you look down (to the bed/ground), you see "sleep" option, but if you look up (over the roof of the shelter), you will see "save" button. Also you can build a frame and cover it with a roof - when you look at the roof, you can save the game. Also under roof you can place fire and meat dryer to prevent them from rain.
5 - one thing that I can mention is that smoker protects fire from rain, which is not really obvious for me. So I typically cover fires with smokers, even though I prefer to dry meat. And yes, unfortunately the game is not intuitive and I watched videos and read wiki to understand how it works. You can grow a lot of things, but this is a very long process, definitely does not worth it. You will find enough plants just by wandering around. Metal crafting does not worth it too (although metal axe is nice). Last advice - do not stay for long at one place. You will find/deplete all eatable plants/fungi and will think only about food. Good luck :)

Many thanks for the quick and informative reply!

I think the game might be a bit less realistic than I expected, but I'm enjoying it so far and I'll definitely keep playing it. I think I just have to adjust my expectations a little. :)

Basically you can survive with a bed of leaves and a roof for the fire since the weather or the rain do not affect, use some coconuts or turtle shell for collect water, food is everywhere you go on forever, everything else is just for fun but it is not needed

Take a look here https://greenhell.fandom.com/wiki/Green_Hell_Wiki

If you find another coconut try crafting it with rope, now you can transport water, including to the fire for boiling :) Some recipes are unlocked by making stuff, some by picking up stuff, and some by going near an already built structure. Lastly you can also experiment by putting things on the crafting stone and seeing if the recipe "counter" is filled or greyed out, the counter with white circles filling when you place something that matches a recipe. Note that some stuff will give extra options if you hold RMB on it, f.ex long sticks or banana leaves can be held RMB on and then press craft. I played probably for 100h before finding that out. Unless youre reading everything off the wiki try doing what I just said on a banana leaf. Im pretty sure you have the other two ingredients in your backpack to fill the recipe with just a little trial and error.
