Green Hell is working hard and you can consider it an "investment", but for the moment is a bit behind.
STORY: pretty much the same.
Short and disappointing (wont tell why, no spoilers).
But way better than The Forest, especially for the voice acting and the visuals.
GAMEPLAY:
- Similarities:
The crafting, the Backpack, planting plants, harvesting... pretty much every single SURVIVAL GAME ever.
- Differences:
No monsters, just animals (not so many types, for the moment) and aggressive natives.
The buildings has many limits and bad collisions. You have to fight to put 2 frames close to each other.
No bridges, ziplines and other fun stuff, no real caves, or climbing.
And the game want to be more realistic, but is actually far from that too.
(I can add more details, if you want, but I'm trying to keep it short)
Why I suggest that anyway?
Because I see the developers working hard and listening to the fans, adding new updates frequently.
If you want to try something more "realistic", without cannibals, monsters, powerful weapons (something more like a real adventure into the rain forest) that's the game for you.
But if you want more, I suggest you to wait, but keep scouting this game for new updates, because it's turning out really well.
I would never buy a game as an 'investment' so take as is and decide.
If you go in real life to some of the forests in the Yucatan, you can go about 10 feet before hitting something deadly. Even the vegetation can be deadly. Is that bit of real life more adventurious the mutants with legs all over them? For me it is
I would agree with above poster that the Forest building is more fun (though I always wanted even more). But zip line/log sled I imagine is a bit more immersion breaking within this game that seems to be much more serious.
Anyhow, I have about 700 hours in the Forest and it's one of my favourite games, but this one is certainly a great contender so far (I'm only about 30 hours int Co-op, haven't really touched the story yet).
The jungle environment is really nice!
The tone of The Forest is a little more on the horror side where as this game tries to emphasize the survival mechanics but sometimes it just makes it feel tedious - you can hardly move a few steps without your character being exhausted, complaining about being hungry and thirsty.
*** If you want more survival element and really like the jungle environment its recommendable, but if you like building shelters/forts/traps The Forest is far superior. ***
Personally I like the player character in The Forest better since he's better prepared even though he's thrown into the survival situation due to a plane crash where as the player character in Green Hell is intolerable to me since he seems ill-prepared. He is purposely there to study the jungle/rain forest and this is apparently his second visit to this specific jungle and he doesn't seem to know basic survival skills or anything about the animals/flora and is much weaker. If the characters crossed paths and for whatever reason had to fight - the character from The Forest would kill the Green Hell character no problem and make an effigy from his severed body parts and would sleep like a baby without any loss of sanity whatsoever where as the Green Hell character has an existential crisis if he eats a bug or if a meal is slightly under-cooked/over-cooked.
I you want to rush in and kill everything go forest first. Green hell has a faster pace of adventure to it and survival. I think i bought both games at once played green hell first and didn t touch forest for months till i had week off work.I`ve only done 57 hours forest got board. I love the crafting on green hell way more.
It comes down to YOU wana jungle game Green Hell,
You wana Canibal stuck on an island game The Forest.
Just have fun, peace dude.
This.
For me there is this creepy paranormal vibe in The Forest and I am too scared to go inside the caves etc. But in Green Hell everything is rational and realistic so it's more adrenaline rush and a need to survive rather than being scared like in The Forest.
Also, I think Green Hell's story is far more interesting. Few days after finishing Story mode I am still thinking about it.
It took them YEARS to release it out of the beta and after that the updates took forever.

I guess they focused their time to work on its sequel "Sons of The Forest".
Maybe it's a good thing: restarting with something new and maybe even better... but (as I am afraid of) if they'll make a completely different game, like a war action shooter, we'll end up with an old good game with no updates in the future and nothing to replace it.
WHile instead I have faith GREEN HELL's guys will keep working on the game, listening to the players and releasing fixes and updates as soon as they can.
personally I like Green Hell as is better then The Forest however I can see how others would see it the other way around.
having said all that, looking at games as an 'investment' is fine as long as one understands that its a gamble. When I invest in the stockmarket I do not assume I am entitled to the company doing what they say they are planning on doing. I think people who invest in the stock market have a more realistic concept of the word..
BUT...on the other hand, if one just bough games that appealed to them (as is) and didnt worry about the whole 'investment' aspect of it they would likely be better off. cuz really if you think about it, it doesnt make a lot of sense to buy a game in which the game as it is when you buy it is not appealing to you.
anyway..both side notes
Hell its hard enough to find a TV show or Movie where the story line is basically just not crap, let alone good. So on that I cant imagine why people would expect any better story from a game...any game. its mostly just crappy placeholders for pre-teenagers

There are a lot of games, out there, with interesting stories and many players enjoy to do more than "just play".
Games like Metal Gear Solid (just an example) would be just half as memorable, without a story.

He asked how's the story because it's probably a good incentive for him to buy the game.
We could answer that is short and not so original, then it's up to him to decide.
