Fishing 101
I got the fishing pole at the fishing camp but have yet to catch a fish after much trying and at different locations. I'm able to cast the line out but never get a bite. I don't seem to have the ability to bait the hook but not sure if that's a requirement either. Also, what is the fish hook craft item for? Seems to have no use. Lastly, my fish traps no longer catch fish. Prior to the update I would get fish after fish in my traps, now nothing for days.

The fishing pole already have the hook, you just need to set the bait after armed. The hook neef for the fishing rod, you will lost many when fishing. Now i'm to the fishing camp and seem the fishing rod need to much time for catch something i prefer the fishing pole for don't lose time or the bow.

Made some progress. Whether using the fishing rod at the camp or making your own, you don't attach the crafted fishing hook until you have the fishing rod equipped and the backpack open. Then a white circle will appear by your hands holding the pole. That was a big piece of the puzzle I was missing. Now I need to figure out what bait to use. I tried what I had on me, which was raw prongs and raw rattlesnake meat but neither will let me attach it. Don't have time to play at the moment but I assume some of the other raw meat will work.

I spent 2 game days on fishing ...
I only lose makroelements

Fishing is definitely not worth to spent time on it - more food I can gater by hunting

ive got these problems too
https://steamcommunity.com/app/815370/discussions/0/1742227898981046777/

for me nothing was biting in the new area. Somebody told me that it worked for him at fishers camp in the old area. I went there, and there it worked for me too.

I was however using old savegame, created with older version. Im speculationg, that it is a bug, which should not appear after starting a new game with the most recent update.

Have a look in your survivalist notepad under the traps sections you should see a few options for the fish trap. I dont see any blueprints for the fishing rod but there is a new one for fishing rod trap and new stick fish traps

I went to the original fishing camp where the water filter and 4 pronged spear is found on the dock. Slighly up river I built a camp and found some larvae on a stump. I attached the larvae and went down to the river's edge and constructed a fish-rod trap as well as the smaller stick fish trap. I baited both traps with larvae and then moved a bit down river to fish using the fishing rod. I could see fish darting around but nothing took my bait. After a good five minutes I went back by the traps and neither had a fish. I then stepped out on a rock that was sticking out of the water and casted my line in. Within about 5 seconds I had a bite but lost the fish. I cast to the same spot and caught a bass within 10 seconds. I guess it's all about being in the right spot, which is realistic. Neither trap produced a fish however.

Are you in Oasis? They only take orange mushrooms.

Mushrooms. That must be the bait I've been missing. I've gotten piranha and bass to bite on larva, and I think I got something else to bite on a maggot once. I'd been trying to shove all sorts of meat and various things onto the hook, but I hadn't tried mushrooms yet. Still looking for a bait that arowana will take.

Fishing right now really seems to be "if you get the right bait and throw it in front of the fish, you'll have a catch within 10 seconds." But if you don't have the right bait, or if you don't have any bait, nothing will ever bite.

Arowana bites on discus.

I've never been able to catch a fish using the rod either, I figured it might like real life cast the line in front of fish then wind in quickly snairing the fish. Nothing works.
The fishing rod trap works then after a few it takes a day or so to get a new one.
The large stick fishing trap and small stick fishing traps are the most reliable. Maybe the game is mow designed to use more snares and traps for various animals then smoke or dry them
There is some new intrigueing little fish like the Discus fish and Rainbow fish very small flat but nice nutrition.

Found that discus and angelfish like maggots. Makes sense. Smaller fish, smaller bait. Once you use some maggots to get a few tiny fish, you can put them on the hook to catch other things. Managed to get arowana with discus and angelfish. The orange mushrooms also seem to work for arowana.
