Best gear/ weapons. What did you experience this far?
Hey everyone,

So I was going through a little list of things you could craft and, man, there are a bunch of things for sure. So I was wondering if the, for example, bone axe is any better in chopping wood, or if its rather for fighting. Things like that, maybe some of you already started experimenting aswell.
I usually use the regular spear as it even seems to kill a jaguar fairly easy with just one toss and it can keep cannibals at bay... for the most part.

So yeah, what combinations are best for tools and/or weapons?
Is Obsidian the strongest givin that you only find a very limited amount?

I think the tool do have different damage value, such as obsidian can chop small figs tree in 4 swing, while normal bone axe takes 6 to 7 chop. Personally I find obsidian to have the highest damage.

I've put many arrows into jaguars, but they just seemed to tank them, thrown spear kills animals in one shot though it seems. Don't recall throwing spears at locals though so I'm not sure on them.

Chop down one of the small twig trees to get a Long Stick, from there you have a couple of ways to make a spear.
Just settinf the Long Stick on the crafting are will allow you to make a Weak Spear
Long Stick + Stone Tool + Rope will give you a Stone Spear, you can substitute Obsidian for stone as well to make a more powerful version.

So we can say that stone weapons are the weakest, followed by bones and at the top are obsidian tools/ weapons. I really hope obsidian will respawn later in the game's developement.

That's actually not very clear. The bone axe in inferior at chopping down trees to the stone axe, and the bone spear takes roughly as many hits to kill an enemy as the stone spear. Obsidian axes and spears are definitely the best.

What about the axes you can make using 3 stone knives?

I haven't even tried most of the weapons, I usually just use bone spears, bow and arrow, bone knife and the stick knife the natives often leave behind at their various spawn locations. I fight with spears and the bow & arrows and use the stick and bone knives to cut down trees. Native made items (as far as i can tell) always come with 100% durability so while the stick knife might be a bit weak, its free and quite common. I have gotten a few Obsidian knifes from Natives but I haven't had a reason to use those over any other weapon yet.... so dust they will collect.

Well, I haven’t gotten around to testing the bone-stuff so far, but wouldn’t the crafting-skill and the individual skill for the equipment you use also affect this?

On obsidian: obsidian should be the best of the bunch, but only at a price. Obsidianshards are usually sharper than surgical-grade scalpels because of the hardness and quality of the material, but since it is so incredibly hard it is also rather brittle. It tends to break/shatter or dull down quite rapidly. So in the game it should be capable of more damage than the other materials, but it should have a noticably worse durability than atleast stone.

I would suggest that you’d use obsidan spears and maybe arrows for fighting the locals and stone for durability in tools, or maybe bone for lighter weight tools seems like a decently realistic approach for what to use in what situations.

This is ofcourse depending on how the devs are going to balance the different materials.

I think obsidian and metal are close with damage but I would say metal is best for all weapons and armor but if you can hit the natives with a head shot spear or iron arrow they seem to always be one shot love this game so far cant wait to see where they go with it

Personally and this is just me but I carry the simple stone axe. Very easy to replace and effective. With a high throwing skill of 40 you can throw it twice and kill a native or throw 2.
On this character Im focusing my throwing skill and I have been one shotting animals with axes.

I just made a metal axe but haven't tested it on natives I imagine its gonna be pretty devastating.

Keep in mind the SKILL governing your weapon plays a large factor in the damage done.
Fighting with spears when you have a higher Bow skill is a questionable course of action since with a high enough Bow Skill you can almost always one shot a native in the head.

At level 40 bow skill Natives were no longer a problem. Keep in mind also that it doesnt matter if your spear is metal, wood, or obsidian if your spear skill is low and your Crafting skill is low making those weapons have lower durability. Personally the Bow is one of the best weapons to hone the skill of early master it and youll never need anything else nor will you fear anything Green hell throws at you.

Also I personally carry two native spears and never bother with the metal stuff they seem to throw the best and I enjoy their point making it easy to aim.

I haven't yet encountered any compelling reason to go beyond the tribal spear and tribal bow (using simple arrows) you get in free abundance from killing the skeleton guys. You don't need to waste time crafting them and they're effective enough. I haven't tried armor yet.
Eagle Aug 22, 2019 @ 8:14pm
Agreed bkrrrrr I love the Tribal stuff it seems top of the line HOWEVER... Though a normal arrow is great the metal ones are worth making because if you do miss they bleed out faster when hit in the torso with a metal one than they do a regular one. I use/d the bow quite extensively and up until I had made metal arrows out of boredom I was fine with the regular ones, Now I actually enjoy the metal ones more and have spent more time making them. about 9 will do you good.

Once you are good with the bow you'll only carry about 3 but it pays to have extra sometimes.
Just one caveat. Unlike the disposable arrows you can make easy, These you want to find and they are not easy to recover if show into the wilderness lol. I try to recover all mine but some I never can find.
