In the FAQ it's said there are no multiplayer plans yet in order to focus on the gameplay itself and the campaign (singleplayer) first. Maybe in the future but not right now.
Which is THE reason I got my eye on this game, as multiplayer tends to dilute the single player experience too much.
right now there is no mp since they are a small team and want to focus on polishing the game first. (they know its a very requested feature so pretty sure there will be mp added later)
The story once it is finished(You are out searching for your wife), need for sleep where time fast forward, way too little food unless you each play in different areas, the sanity effects, the difficulty and a lot of other things that won't work well or at all in a multiplayer scenario.
If they changed these things to fit multiplayer they would likely ruin the immersion and challenge for singleplayers.
Not for nothing, but I've only played about 6 hours of this game and even before they took out the random native attacks I was basically set and could /easily/ get more food than I needed stuff is rotting in my backpack all the time. I don't know that you could do more than 2 people necessarily without living in different areas (though there's nothing wrong with this, since the bamboo only spawns where it does so gathering and stockpiling different resources would be neat to trade or whatever) but they could easily just make a 2 person non-story co-cop survival experience where you're playing the boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife characters together. There's more than enough resources for two people if you're diligent and careful about it.

You can add the multiplayer tag to any game even singleplayer games
But to come back to your initial question since there is no multiplayer in this game no one can answer this question
